On wings of deathw book
What starts out as an investigation into the suicide of a WWI flying officer becomes a fascinating tale of life in a British Air Service squadron in 1916 326 What was supposed to be an investigation into a suicide turned into air battles machine airplanes of WW1 landscapes brothel air battle descriptions When a free moment to sleep showed up we had a bit on the investigation 326 Well that was a book that never really got going with the original story line The actual detective work seemed to be lost beneath the main story even though that was the plot but in the end that aspect really didn t seem to matter at all Top marks though for writing about air combat in the First World War and NOT using the usual aircraft such as Sopwith Camels Fokker DRI s and Fokker D7 s It was refreshing to read about the lesser known types and their idiosyncracies In the end the reason Heyward died didn t really have too much bearing on the tale as it was told The ending was a little contrived but the atmosphere in the squadron during these testing times was conveyed wonderfully. On wings of deathpox Have a go and enjoy something different Four stars from me for an isight into non usual subjects 326 This was a great read Entertaining and insightful of the period 326
A military aviator investigates a suspicious death in a novel of mystery action and intrigue set against the backdrop of the First World War They found the officer hanging in his hut another man who couldn t take the relentless pressure of flying operations it seemed His fellow officers hadn t liked him much anyway Besides what was one death among the thousands dying on the Western Front Except that this man s family had connections to Field Marshal Kitchener and no one wanted him distracted on the eve of the big push on the Somme So Investigator Miller is sent to the squadron to tie up the loose ends to tidy the incident away For some reason they think he is well equipped for that sort of thing But it s all Miller can do to keep himself alive flying daily over enemy lines And then he finds the suicide isn t quite as straightforward as it s supposed to be Particularly when a second man turns up dead purportedly shot with his own pistol Set against the backdrop of the Great War and infused with a sense of intrigue and high drama this is a novel of unsettling force With a keen eye for detail David J Oldman evokes the brutality of mud spattered battlefields and aerial combat bringing the reader right up close to the action As events spiral and the war continues to impact upon the investigation On Wings of Death creates a real sense of unease and urgency as it barrels toward an unexpected fascinating conclusion On Wings of DeathBorn into the austerity of post war Britain David J Oldman began writing in his early twenties and is now unable to break the habit Frequently humorous and often deceptively moving his books are an examination of ordinary people caught up in life changing events beyond their control He presently lives with his wife in the New Forest in the south of England adjusting to a life just beyond his own control while pursuing his deep interest in history writers and writing.
