This is not a short story with jump scares or any great macabre twists Instead Edith Wharton masterfully builds up a story that is filled with nothing but an overbearing dreadful silence I really enjoyed it Fiction On the face of it not a lot is happening but All Souls explores the anxiety of someone who is strong and independent but suddenly becomes debilitated and is then placed into an uncanny situation The uneasiness is ramped up by the protagonist s incapacity Then to top it off her memory of her experience is called into question as if her mind would be the next thing to fail her This is a clever tale that plays on the fear of becoming old and or infirm Available in Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton as well as on youtube 4. Deborah harkness all souls book 6 5 stars Fiction An interesting short story Fiction An interesting longish short story It neither scared me much nor impressed me Yet it was interesting how Edith Wharton takes the traditional 19th century gothic and places it into modernity The turreted castles become the comfortable suburban house which can be scarier with all its mechanical noises and electrical appliances that have made nature and its calming tranquility appear disturbing. All souls book 4 It was not among the best short stories I have read but it was thought provoking and a quite different appendum in the gothic genre Fiction A strange little story about a widow who lives alone in an old house with her servants On all souls eve or in modern parlance Halloween she goes out for her usual walk and encounters a woman walking toward the house When she asks where she is going she only says the see one of the girls which the widow takes to mean one of her servants She doesn t think about it again however as she falls and breaks her ankle on her way back and is bedridden for the night waiting for the doctor to return the next day with the X ray machine But when she wakes the next morning the house is quiet dark and cold the snowstorm having knocked out the electricity phone and heat She stumbles around the house in search of her servants but the house in empty except for a radio turned to a foreign station She passes out and when she awakes she is in her bed in pain and feverish with her lady maid Agnes and the doctor examining her ankle She tries to explain what happened but they blame it on the fever and pain She recovers and thinks nothing else about it until a year later she meets the same woman on her walk She leaves the house and never returns Fiction
