The Hansens seemed to be a contented happy family when the kids were young Brandon the oldest was the perfect son continuing the tradition of being a great athlete like his father and grandfather before him The twins Jaden and Jenny revered their older brother and sought to emulate him As Brandon started high school and the twins began middle school things in the idyllic American family began to change The siblings had typical teenage issues in school as well as with their parents but it was than that Fighting drugs and suspensions had never been in their plans Picture perfect on the outside the family was jolted when Jaden who wanted nothing than to please his dad and older brother failed miserably as he began to discover his sexual identity If it hadn t been for the support of his sister and a neighbor Jaden might have tried to end his life long before he did While dealing with Jaden a twin sister who attempts to follow in his footsteps to win love and approval an overbearing father and a mother who goes along to get along Jaden feels like he doesn t belong in the Hansen household He makes friends with the retired teacher who lives across the street since his interests don t mesh with what everyone else does As time passes Jaden finds himself and alienated from most of the family Only his sister is sympathetic to his desire to be true to himself instead of living to please others This would have been a much stronger story if it had been told entirely from Jaden s point of view The author had a good premise for a coming of age story about a boy trying to discover his sexual identity However the regular use of omniscient viewpoint also distanced the reader from what could have been a strong main character Because of this there didn t seem to be a chance for Jaden to truly grow and develop by the end of the story he needed of an opportunity to shine and to learn how to deal with others Perhaps if Jaden had been allowed to share his story the reader would have learned what strategies he had to make his life better Still Jaden is a good kid and most readers will want to see him succeed on his life journey It will be interesting to see what happens next.
