But that s what keeps it feeling authentic to me It s also not full of gratuitous gore sex violence I was really disappointed when I searched for E Catherine Tobler on and found she didn t have a sequel available that I could find Hopefully she will in the future 352 Seriously good Egyptian supernatural steampunkHaving read a lot steampunk and others things called steampunk is was a pleasure to read this book The pacing and depth of the main characters are excellent and the slow reveal of critical information increased the depth of involvement and engagement for me This isn t a book of large info dumps rather it is a well paced story with a very solid base of Egyptian myth and belief that has moments of tension.

I really can t remember the last time I so thoroughly enjoyed an adventure novel The integration of steampunk elements is remarkable the stately pace is masterful and the characters are vibrantly and realistically drawn Every scene break I felt as if Tobler conjured a wipe as a transition and the jumps from historical set piece to historical set piece were marked by a red line flowing across a map. Rings in mythology So 5 10 stars for a middling and occasionally baffling story but an extra star for sheer heart There s the seed of something compelling here Tobler just needs practice 352 I won this book from Goodreads Giveaways Thank you I enjoyed this romp through Egypt and Paris in the late 1890 s I did have a little trouble keeping track of dates and places although they were clearly labeled whenever there was a change It was all my own fault for wanting to find out what happens next rather than taking the time to figure out where when I was I really liked the steampunk aspects of the book from the airships to the Paris Exposition with flying mechanical pterodactyls and to Cleo s arms and hands I m also a sucker for werewolves and found Virgil Mallory to be an exceptionally endearing example of one I was also quite taken with Anubis and the Egyptian Mythology I found myself wanting to brush off the sand and I swear I could feel the heat of the desert even though temperatures here aren t all that warm I wouldn t be surprised if I feel Anubis calling my name in my dreams tonight Freaky cool I also enjoyed the supporting cast of characters They each had their own personality rather than being cardboard cutouts I also appreciated that Eleanor was proud to claim the title of librarian I kept picturing her as the woman from the movie The Mummy since they both were full of spunk and apt to get themselves into trouble because of their curiosity All in all an enjoyable read 352 Rings of Anubis perfectly balances adventure and romance offering deep characters and a fun romp all in one The place where the novel really shone for me was in the settings Tobler brings each location from the Paris Exposition to the deserts of Egypt to stunning life with rich sensual detail I felt as though I d experienced each sight sound and taste along with the characters While the other senses aren t neglected there s a highly visual quality to Tobler s writing in this book It s the kind of story that begs to be made into a movie Knowing there s a sequel planned I m already looking forward to the next book 352 3 1 2 stars 352
