New World in order to worship as they please as well as live as they pleased Settling in the midst of the cold north in New England they were an isolated community of controlling religious fanatics Perfect fodder for the mass hysteria that was about to ensue fueled by the ergot virus which grows on rye grass OMG In their ignorant minds the demons and witchery told of in the Bible had come to pass Ahhh. Book accession number but it didn t take long for the greedy to capitalize on the mass hysteria and accuse innocents of being a Witch in order to gain their land and possessions In the midst of this Jeani chronicles the struggles of a young Ruth as she is indentured into the servitude of the crazed and greedy minister and then accused by his niece Abigail of being a witch.

If you lived in 1692 Salem Massachusetts what if you were accused of witchcraft What would you do if you were singled out with false evidence and your very life was at stake Accused A Tale of the Salem Witch Trials is historical fiction a novel based upon real events that turns into romance and treachery Ruth Putnam lives in 1692 Salem and she witnesses the mass accusations of witchcraft coming closer and closer until it finally reaches her and she is put on trial for her very life This novel focuses upon the theory that tainted rye grain infected with the ergot virus which is a strong hallucinogen if ingested may have been the original catalyst in an event of horrific magnitude that was the Salem Witch Trials An exciting and unflinching trip into a dark period of American history I was really there with Ruth trying to make sense of it all as the madness builds Jeffrey L Shipley publisher of Tales of Blood and Roses Accused A Tale of the Salem Witch TrialsJeani Rector postulates in her recent book on the Salem Witch trials Accused A Tale Of The Salem Witch trials that the ergot virus was responsible as the catalyst for the ensuing massacre of innocent people accused of being evil Witches A tale of historical horror depicting the plight of the Puritans in their new world told with Jeani s magical touch Accused is a short read at only 212 pages written in the same style and format as her earlier work Pestilence another historical perspective written about the plague The story centers around a young woman named Ruth Putnam who has just been indentured into servitude to the new local minister s home in order to train to be a good wife or the Goodwife Jeanie points out that in the Puritan community of long ago the term Good was given to mere commoners those without social or financial status such as the Putnam s Yet Ruth s father really wasn t all that well off and he was struggling struggling to the point where he needed to marry off his daughters which were becoming a financial burden with the extra mouths to feed The new minister in town offered the perfect opportunity The story begins with what is pretty much common knowledge regarding the history of the witch trails and the story of the young girls who accused the servant woman named Tituba of being a witch Central to the main character Ruth are the characters of the minister s niece Abigail Williams the Reverend Parris Betty Parris the daughter of the Reverend and William Porter the love interest of Ruth Jeani paints Abigail as a ruthless spoiled child who seizes on her position as the minister s daughter to gain control over people and advance her own childish political agenda The Puritans left their homeland for the brought to trial and accused even by members of her own family and finally sentenced to hang It was William who saved her in ways than one and finally young Abigail is exposed for the psycho she is The ending reminded me of that fairy tale The boy who cried wolf Abigail is depicted as a crazed lair and when she accused yet another of being a Witch on the street instead of people stopping to listen they walked on by Jeani seemed to drop the ball at the ending it wasn t the ending one would expect Of course one expected Ruth and William to get together but even their ending was ordinary Overall The Accused is an enjoyable historical fiction read however it lacked in originality The Accused appears to be a cookie cutter replica of Jeani s earlier book Pestilence A Medieval Tale Of Plague I give The Accused A Tale Of The Salem Witch Trials a four star rating Accused A Tale of the Salem Witch Trials
