Like or dislike the author s literary style he writes it as he saw it and as he experienced his tour in Vietnam I highly rated this book and even so recommend it because he makes no excuses about articulating his fears as he was getting short in his tour His tour put him in a position where he had to take lives and where he witnessed his men die or be wounded You can t sugar coat the reality of war and this book should be required reading by all officers Frank Hill Never having read a book about the Vietnam War this was an eye opener and helped me to understand so many things about being a marine there Well written and insightful Truthful and honest without being gory or too detailed I especially enjoyed the letters included Frank Hill
