Christmas Union fiction

Rebecca Mendenhall is counting the days to Christmas when she ll wed Johnny Whittier in their Quaker Meeting House But in September a division is formed between Rebecca and Johnny The Fugitive Slave Law is enacted making it illegal to aid runaway slaves in Pennsylvania punishable by heavy fines and prison sentences Rebecca s parents are avid abolitionists and Johnny father is not believing Quakers must abide by the laws of the land Division s among the Quakers on how to deal with this new law splits their Meeting House in two Rebecca in one house and Johnny in another Will Rebecca and Johnny be united by their wedding date or will Rebecca see Levi Vickman a passionate young abolitionist in a new light A house divided against itself cannot stand Rebecca s parents warn her implying someone like Levi would be a better match Abolitionists such as Harriet Tubman Sojourner Truth and John Greenleaf Whittier persuade many Quakers who feel they are breaking this new law realize that they are keeping a commandment from God to cloth the naked feed the hungry and remember those in chains Christmas Union is based on true stories of abolitionist in Chester Country PA and the anguish the Fugitive Slave Law brought to the local Quakers Karen Anna Vogel is an author on a mission to use stories to entertain and encourage but most of all to help heal the hurtingand she does it masterfully Kathi Macias prolific author of 40 novels including Unexpected Christmas Hero Karen Anna Vogel is the author of the popular Amish Knitting Circle series She goes straight to the Amish grapevine for inspiration having many Amish friends in Western Pennsylvania To date she has five novels Amish Knitting Circle Smicksburg Tales 1 Amish Friends Knitting Circle Smicksburg Tales 2 Amish Knit Lit Circle Smicksburg Tales 3 Knit Together The Amish Doll Granny Jeb s Love Story and Amish Pen Pals Rachael s Confession Karen lives in a century old farmhouse with her husband Tim where they enjoy homesteading They have four married children and a granddaughter who they plan to spoil rotten Visit her blog Amish Crossings or her Facebook author page to celebrate the simple life See hundreds of her Amish pictures swap gardening tips and thrifty recipes meet fellow knitters and crocheters and leave prayer requests Christmas Union Quaker Abolitionist of Chester County Pennsylvania Historical Suspense Novella This story takes place just after the enactment of the Fugitive Slave Act Abolitionist Quakers in the north having been working on the Underground Railroad are now in trouble They can be fined 1000 and sent to prison for 6 months for feeding and clothing the runaways who come to them They justify this by pointing out that they are called to feed the hungry clothe the naked and house the homeless It s their religious freedom On the other side of things some Quakers who in this book are shown to be coming at this from a racist perspective say the abolitionists are breaking a Biblical commandment to follow the laws of the land Some of them seem to not want to believe that slavery is that bad They read out the abolitionist members of their Meetings to distance themselves from law breakers The abolitionists in return set up the Society for Progressive Friends a new branch of Quakerism The send them all back to Africa sentiment common to both abolitionist and non abolitionist northerners makes an appearance. Christian union bank This is all historically accurate Now for the fiction part of this historical fiction Rebecca Mendenhall is from an abolitionist family She is engaged to marry Johnny Whittier cousin to John Greenleaf Whittier Johnny s father is an ardent anti abolitionist and when the law comes into effect he insists John break off the engagement Rebecca doesn t want that so she pleads with Johnny to read Sojourner Truth s book and contact his cousin even as she continues to operate as part of the Underground Railroad Aside from the story bits I particularly appreciated the moment when Eliza a black woman tells Rebecca that she has her own voice and can speak for her own self if she feels it necessary so let her English Rebecca Mendenhall is the 18 year old daughter of abolitionist parents Their house is a safe house for runaway slaves But Rebecca is unaware of it until her father tells her about the establishment of the new Fugitive Slave Law That law says that all runaway slaves in the area where Rebecca lives must be returned to the South Her dear black friend Eliza is no longer safe at their home They have grown up together since they were ten years old and made a covenant that they would never part from each other Now Rebecca must bring Eliza and an older runaway slave to another safe house. Christian union lux Rebecca finds out that she already has been working for the abolitionists for some time because she wrote many letters for her father in a code language but she wasn t aware of it In the new safe house run by three sisters dedicated to the cause Rebecca learns about the code language and about the dangers for the runaway slaves and the people who help them. EPub Christmas union savings When Rebecca left her hometown she also left behind her fianc Johnny His father is against abolitionism and doesn t want Johnny to marry Rebecca Johnny can t believe Rebecca is an abolitionist but he soon will find out otherwise Johnny has to search his heart whose side he takes. PDF Christmas union city Danger is getting closer When Rebecca is helping some runaway slaves to another safe house they are being tracked by dogs Will they escape What choice will Johnny make Can Rebecca and Eliza stay together This is the fifth story in the Cry of Freedom Series I found this a nicely written and interesting novella The author has a lovely way with words and knows how to draw the reader in All stories in this series are enjoyable and I recommend them all English I found this book quite interesting because it portrayed a segment of the Civil War that I knew nothing about Apparently there was a division among the Quakers regarding the issue of slavery and it divided up families as well as church meeting house groups One segment believed they had no call to action to help escaping slaves and they should just be sent back to Africa The other segment believed it was their Christian duty to help the underground railroad move the slaves to freedom either in the north or up to Canada Rebecca Mendenhall is a young adult Quaker and only has thoughts for her promised husband Johnny But she also was worried what might happen to her black friend Eliza who had escaped from slavery and become like a sister to her With the fugitive slave laws Rebecca realizes she can no longer stay neutral but Johnny has been raised to approve of slavery If she takes a stand beside her parents what will happen to them and to her and Johnny The focus of this story is staying true to your beliefs of what you know is right no matter the consequences Filled with characters who played such a strong role in black freedom at the time such as Sojourner Truth Harriet Tubman and John Greenleaf Whitaker this story brought to life the decisions people had to make and how it affected their lives and their faith English Quick little read about the Underground Railroad and Quakers that were persecuted because they wanted to help slaves gain freedom It showcased a young woman who lived out her Christianity by being a friend to all It was told in the voice of a Quaker so the language was not modern That added to the flavor of the era I like hearing historical stories about Pennsylvania because my father was born there and we visited every summer I purchased an ebook from All opinions are my own English As I have read several fiction and nonfiction books on the Quaker Abolitionists I have always had a high regard and respect of them To me they are what I see is a true Christian how they see all human beings created by God with no regard to color of skinracethe poorthe sick They reached out to help them out There are however a few of them that still held hatelike the ones in Chester CountyPennsylvania The historical setting and information of the time and era was very interesting English
