Ithaka on the horizontal lyrics S with his family as a young boy after a pogrom against Greeks in 1955 that whole horrendous time was new to me I liked the way the author tied in events of modern Greek history and gave explanations and translations of Greek words or phrases I liked the author s gentle humor The vignettes of various family members made these people come alive for me Outstanding was his photo album after reading about his family Highlights were his recent trip to Greece and Turkey especially the visit of him and his son Niko to Mount Athos the Holy Mountain Later Niko was tonsured as a monastic Stavros admits it was hard for him to reach acceptance of Niko s decision Some of the author s political comments towards the end did make me uneasy His love of and pride in his Greek heritage shines through on every page Scattered throughout Stavros gives us gems of his wisdom and common sense he s learned through his life This is a must read.
