45 stars 320 I found this author s writing to be well organized thorough and clear I m in America and the author is British so it was also interesting to read from his perspective 320 Overall a very good introduction to the field with language that was on the perfect edge of technical and beginner friendly I do wish it wasn t written from a purely British English perspective and no audio for examples though I suppose that s what I get for reading something that Oxford uses as summer reading material 320 This was a highly organized informative and detailed introduction to linguistics and much of it was overwhelming to me I should have followed the author s advice in the preface and fished around for topical and translatable chapters Still I think what I gleaned from my first dive into linguistics from this edition will help carry me into my first linguistics class 320 This is a detailed survey of the field with references for further inquiry The presentation is clear and straightforward but it is rather technical 320
