Thyme Taylor has spent her entire life preparing for Florida Academy of Ballet and now she s there But when a cute boy an overbearing mother and an eating disorder threaten to ruin everything Thyme must separate what really matters from what doesn t before it s too late Ballet Slippers and Chocolate CheesecakeSurprisingly okay were this three times as long I think it would have a chance of being pretty good Pretty decent writing and potentially interesting characters but there s just not enough space for the story to develop fully Two and a half stars. EBook Ballet Slippers and Chocolate cheesecake recipe Notes Some funny little similarities between this and Memoirs of a Dancer both have antagonistic relationships with their mothers though here Thyme s mother wants her to be a better dancer and there Carolina s mother doesn t want her to dance at all both have absent fathers one dead one divorced and Thyme s middle name is Caroline John Meyer is probably not the best name to give a character whom the protagonist is eventually going to search for on the computertoo similar to the name John Mayer What do you wear babysitting with a really cute boy I ask Hanna frantically. Ballet slippers and chocolate cheesecake� Just wear really ratty clothes If he really likes you he s like you in whatever you wear Hanna says 64 Go Hanna I loved this the reality is probably a little nuanced but I appreciate a character who can give that advice and in Thyme s case a character who can see some sense in it When Thyme starts dancing badly she is reclassified into a less difficult groupall the way down from B almost the best to P the worst group Seems just a little extreme no They wouldn t try dropping her to C or D or E or whatever first Actually that reminds me that we see almost none of the classes and I think none of the other students Victims of the shortness of the book left to languish off page Both the development and the resolution of Thyme s eating disorder happen pretty much in summary she cuts back over the summer which we don t see in scene and then when she s hospitalised she says I d like to say that recovering is something that happens in an instant But that s not how it goes It takes years actually 100 Nice that that s acknowledged but it would be nicer if we d been given than an instant of that recovery Other anorexia related book issues 1 When Thyme asks the nurse if she Thyme has an eating disorder the nurse tells her yes she has anorexiawhich is a not something the nurse would be allowed to tell her and b not something that they d likely diagnose without Thyme talking to a doctor Suspect but not diagnose 2 The hospital makes the call apparently without consulting Thyme or her parents or for that matter her insurance that she ll go get treatment in another hospital in a different country Uhh No 3 When she gets to that other hospital she seems to be given free rein to come and go as she pleases right from the beginning whichis not usually a thing in eating disorder programmes Wait what The boy she met in Miami just happens to be from Vancouver which is where she just happens to be sent for treatment and where her estranged father just happens to live And he came down to Miami to make money for university from odd jobs Howwhy Who is a citizen of where And how do his travel costs not eat up all the money he s trying to save for university Thyme turns away from ballet at the end of the book and I would have loved to see of that internal process Is it solely because of the anorexia Did she ever truly love ballet or did she only feel pressured to succeed because of her mother What are her other aspirations Just another place where the book could have used space I guess Paperback 1.
