I am a potato book
Not as good as My Dog Is A Carrot but fun I like the illustrations and my favourite poem is the tortoise one 80 Perfect post War and Peace refresher Best bit The dog runsnot after the nunsafter the bunsor are they potatoes Who knows The catKnowsNothing 80 There were some good poems but a lot of them were forced or just felt given up on The illustrations could have been okay but the slightly messy style just make the collection feel even thrown together The Hamstar poem for example has two paragraphs with the first cute in it s slightly forced rap like rhyming scheme then the second paragraph is completely free verse with the only relation being the subject Maybe they were meant to be completely different poems but it didn t seem they were laid out that way And on the facing pages Gnat Poem suffers from the same problem with the rhymes being flit gnit stitches pitch is woodland sometimes 80
This is an amusing collection of poems and drawings for children about animals ranging from A to Z But somehow he left out the letter L It is still a fun read though 80 Forty five poems many of them wacky and filled with word play provide humorous meditations on animals life and changing stripes The collection begins with A for Alligator and ends with Z The Dog Runs Zoom and moves to all sorts of points in between Many of them poems appear on sheets of notebook paper and all of them make readers think or do a double take This volume might provide the inspiration would be poets need to try their hands at writing a line or two I enjoyed some a lot than others and some of them just left me a little puzzled Among the collection there is even one about zombies 80 There s a fine line in children s poetry books between poems that are funny and witty and poems which are entirely weird and poorly written I think for most of the poems in the boook John Hegley chose to be weird for the sake of weirdness and that some poems are simply forced and inconsequential 80 I recently had the great pleasure of seeing John perform what was simply a brilliant touching and quirky performance of some of his poems I got this as a momento to remind me of the evening The poems are indeed witty but nothing compared to hearing him perform them 80 Loved the collection of poems in this book There were also good examples of an acrostic poems 80
This is a very funny witty zany collection for children which will also appeal to the author s adult fans It has all the John Hegley comic hallmarks including references to wearing glasses Luton and dogs being superior to cats The poems are arranged alphabetically by title with family pets and other animals featuring strongly from a mosquito and ants through wise camels goldfish and guillemots to Toby the armadillo from Peru and not forgetting the unusual unicorn in school The book is packed with John s unique brand of deadpan humour and is illustrated in scrap book style with the author s own quirky line drawings This is a poetry book like no other I am a Poetato An A Z of poems about people pets and other creatures.
