Gifts from the enemyy book review
Alter was captured and sent to several different prison camps where he was treated cruelly and never given enough food A German woman took a big risk and secretly gave him food every day for a month This book has lots of terrific messages for young readers about kindness and bravery The back of the book has some great discussion questions and activities for teachers who would like to share this in their classrooms 32 Will definitely be using this with my middle schoolers to introduce the Holocaust Alter Wiener is a survivor who has written an adult level book about what he endured This children s book focuses on the kindness of one woman who helped him survive 32 Wow What an important book I read it I devoured the after notes just to get information I closed the book and then read it again. A must read historical fiction picture book about a simple act of kindness extended by a German factory worker to a Jewish prisoner during WWII Best line There are the kind and the cruel in every group of people How those you meet in life treat you is far important than who they are 32 This was a very well written important book It deals with a very harsh topic in an amazing way The story is enough for younger kids to understand the horror of the Holocost and the suggested activities glossary discussion questions and information included in the back of the book is a great addition for older kids The fact that a female German helps Alter is very dangerous and the fact that she didn t have to do it and risked her life doing it makes Alter and the reader all the grateful for the act This story is written from Alter Weiner s point of view as a holocaust survivor and is incredibly moving The illustrations are stunning The story is kind of sweet in a very sad way It shows how terrible people can be and yet how wonderful too NOTE I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review 32 Wow So simple beautiful and powerful This is a must have book for the library My favorite quote from his mother There are two ways to deal with the cold Put on a fur coat to be warm or light a fire so that others can be warm too 32 Will definitely be using this with my middle schoolers to introduce the Holocaust Alter Wiener is a survivor who has written an adult level book about what he endured This children s book focuses on the kindness of one woman who helped him survive 32 An inspiring and thought provoking book about the Holocaust A good introduction for kids with important historical elements but still being age appropriate 32 This beautifully written and illustrated picture book biography tells the story of Alter Wiener a holocaust survivor who despite the horrible atrocities he witnessed focused on the kindness of a German stranger who risked her life to give him food Alter grew up in a small Polish town in a home that was full of books food laughter and love His parents were very kind and giving and raised him to always look for the best in people and to help those less fortunate After Germany invaded Poland in 1939 There are the kind and the cruel in every group of people How those you meet in life treat you is far important than who they are 32 Gifts from the Enemy is based on Alter Wiener s book From a Name to a Number A Holocaust Survivor s Autobiography It is many years after the Holocaust and Atler begins his personal story of survival by telling the reader that he was an ordinary person with an extraordinary past. Ebook gifts from the enemy review Alter was only 13 when the Nazis invaded Poland including his small village of Chrzan w Up until the invasion on September 1 1939 the Wiener family Papa Mama and brother Schmuel and Hirsch had lived a comfortable happy life His mother was a generous woman and every Shabbath she made sure there was enough food to share with the homeless and less fortunate But soon after the Nazis arrived Jews no longer had any rights they could not go to school the park to the synagogue and a curfew was imposed making all Jews prisoners in their own homes Before long the Nazis came for Alter s father killing him A year later they came for his brother Schmuel. Book gifts from the enemy author When Alter was 15 the Nazis came for him in the middle of the night He never saw any of his family again Atler was sent to a prison labor camp where he and the other prisoners were always cold and hungry and forced to work long hard hours. Gifts from the enemyx xenoblade x While working in a German factory a German worker caught his attention and pointed to a box Later Alter went to see what she was pointing at Underneath a box was a bread and cheese sandwich This went on for 30 day and Atler believes that this woman not only helped to save his life but taught him the valuable lesson that there are the kind and the cruel in every group of people. Gifts from the enemyville After the Russian Army liberated the camp Alter was in he tried to find the woman who had shown him some kindness at a time when kindness towards Jews was forbidden He never did discover who she was but he has never forgotten her. Gifts to send your enemy Trudy Ludwig has taken the adult version of Alter Wiener s story and simplified it for younger readers yet it never sounds condescending or patronizing The book is written from Alter s point of view and as he recounts his experiences Ludwig is able to include a lot of historical information in his narrative about the Nazi occupation of Poland and about the horror that was the Holocaust without overwhelming or frightening the reader. Gifts from the enemyz zzz Gifts from the Enemy was illustrated by Craig Orback His realistic oil paintings are light in times of freedom happiness or hope and appropriately dark during the days of Alter s imprisonment by the Nazis With its message of hope at the end Gifts from the Enemy is an excellent choice to begin the difficult talking about the Holocaust with children especially as a read aloud And to help do that Ludwig has included information about hate the Holocaust a vocabulary for what might be unfamiliar words for many kids as well as discussion questions and activities for young readers. Gifts from the enemyz lyrics This book is recommended for readers age 7 This book was borrowed from the NYPLThis review was originally posted at The Children s War 32 An excellent picture book of what happened to the Polish civilians during WWII The author talks about how Hitler didn t like differences.
