After Freedom epub file This a great introduction I think I have a better understanding now It is partly an anthropological comparison with African American history but mostly a detailed study of 7 individual South Africans from vastly different backgrounds Nonfiction Social Sciences An awesomely written awesomely researched and perhaps most important awesomely timely read I love reading nonfiction to learn new things and I won t lie when I received this book in the mail and read the dust jacket I was slightly afraid I had gotten my hands on a mini textbook of sorts But how wrong was I at least about the negative connotations of textbook The book presented stories not as complete representations generalizing the entire post apartheid experience but as windows into a mansion of experience I coming from a background of knowing little to nothing about the subject gained a lot of knowledge as was my goal but also I felt this book opened my eyes as a citizen An incredible read highly recommended Nonfiction Social Sciences This work admirable as the project might be really suffers from being overly academic The prose is weighted down by overly formal language and extended digressions into history explanation rationales and analysis What might have been powerful stories are instead shaped tortured into black white pictures of individuals who are made to be flat and fairly one sided when depicted in the narrow confines of the academic and authorial interest presented here Truthfully I found this last issue somewhat infuriating because I felt that the book s project did have so much merit but that the starkly academic approach took all of the color and life from the projects reducing to flat case studies what should have been powerful introductions to real people. After freedomcare The best moments for the book are in its analysis of history and in the first person anecdotes where a reader is actually able to hear the voices of the people the author examined Unfortunately these first person moments with the people at the center of the book are few enough to be little than glimmers of understanding in what is otherwise presented in such a flat manner as to be incredibly unengaging. Book After freedom mortgage Newman and De Lannoy easily bridge the gap between academic and popular nonfiction with a meticulously researched and emotionally gripping study of seven South African young adults of the post apartheid generation The book has many fine qualities It is nonjudgmental which is impressive because of how emotionally fraught race and economic issues are It is rigorous It is compassionate and it is aware of its own privilege It s also a very easy read there s a lot narrative than there is quantitative data so it s highly accessible There s no implication that everyone in South Africa shares the views or experiences of the study participants but the details of the lives of the participants are used to give depth and texture to numbers that would otherwise start to run together I brought certain biases to reading this book so I think I should share what this book is not For one when I think about South Africa I admit that I think of the HIV AIDS pandemic HIV was not discussed at any length in this book which surprised me The estimated rates of infection were provided and then the authors moved on I also tend to think about the use of South Africa as a neoliberal laboratory see Naomi Klein s The Shock Doctrine and the widespread belief that the ANC failed to secure meaningful economic sovereignty during the transition from apartheid government Those economic negotiations and their impact on the current South African economy are not discussed at all Due to my previous knowledge of and interest in these particular topics I was surprised that they weren t covered This is in no way a criticism of the work merely an observation. After freedomain locals Last but not least I was delighted that this book wasn t an unthinking celebration of progress So much media about South Africa focuses on the end of the freedom struggle as if Mandela leaves prison becomes president and then everything is going to be okay As Newman and De Lannoy demonstrate young South Africans are keenly aware that the political leadership after Mandela leaves a lot to be desired and that while some significant barriers have fallen too many people are being left behind Nonfiction Social Sciences Very interesting and I learned a lot I would love to visit South Africa in person My only complaint is that I would have liked to see photos throughout the book Nonfiction Social Sciences In 1994 South Africa underwent a remarkably peaceful transition Governance by the all white National Party came to an end and a national election placed power in the hands of the African National Congress ANC Along with this transition the remaining legal constructs of apartheid were abolished For the majority of South Africans the struggle for freedom had been won but the hard work of transforming a nation into a just society had just started After Freedom makes a determined effort to define the attitudes and opinions that spanned the societal spectrum of South Africa some twenty years after the 1994 election The approach used by Katherine Newman divided South Africa into seven socioeconomic groups She then chose a representative member from each group and studied that person for approximately two years. After freedomky The study of each representative consisted of periodic interviews with the designated person as well as their family friends and acquaintances After Freedom is essentially a report on the successes and failures of ANC governance as perceived by Newman s selected group of people Additionally Newman provides various statistical facts that support supplement or at times contradict her subject s observations. After Freedom epub.pub The end result is a book that should be cautiously read The impressions of South Africa that are imparted are the impressions of an extremely limited sample of people These impressions may extend to a great many people or they may be limited to the unique experiences of the individual By the end of the book I found myself relying on the footnoted facts about South Africa than on the opinions of the individuals to form my own impression of life in the new South Africa twenty plus years after its remarkable transformation. EPub After freedompay From my perspective After Freedom illuminates a new South Africa that is still extremely new It s somewhat meaningless to look at the country at this stage in their journey It is unquestionably good that apartheid was eliminated even if the overnight removal of such a power and control structure resulted in their current problems with social uncertainty and large increases in crime To this end the ANC has been deficient in ensuring that access to education is universal Law enforcement could also be expanded and focused on the worst elements of crime in the country However good governance is about priorities and with so many people living in abject poverty at the start of majority rule those priorities have centered upon alleviating starvation bringing clean water to poor communities and providing basic sanitation These are not flashy things that broadcast success to the outside world and they are not easy things that can be accomplished quickly But they needed to be done and the government is achieving measurable and commendable progress. After freedomland usa The world s perception of South Africa as being the safe and modernized country at the tip of the African continent will likely return but when it does the citizens of the entire nation will share in that success However that is just my opinion based on the contents of just one book and my hopes for a country that I found truly enchanting during my visit in 2002 Nonfiction Social Sciences Newman s book about school shootings was my first introduction to her work and this engaging critical ethnography analysis of a group of born frees in post apartheid South Africa was an excellent follow up More than anything the book illustrates the power of education to enhance upward mobility regardless of race Nonfiction Social Sciences I received this book free from LibraryThing s Early Reviewer program The authors wanted to show how people are adapting to the post apartheid society in South Africa They worked with researchers and outreach programs to enroll 7 persons from the three major racial groups in South Africa Black Coloured and White Some black people are doing well in the new society and others are still living in extreme poverty due to policies put in place under apartheid Based upon this book the government has done a great deal providing old age pensions for everyone child support payments for single parents and housing clean water for millions of people But there are still millions of people living in extreme poverty Reading about the extreme poverty was depressing I have one complaint There is a missing footnote Chapter 6 p 132 footnote 6 Footnotes at the back of the book for chapter 6 stop at footnote 5. Nonfiction After freedom debt It s a smart book starting with the selection of participants This isn t a random group they were chosen based on race class gender and political view among presumably other factors The authors don t make the mistake of treating these individuals as representatives of their class race etc. After freedominhours Each individual is treated as something of a case study we don t get full biographies and there isn t a linear narrative or question of chronologically what happened next Instead we see Brandon s loss of tangible financial benefits associated with being White capitalised per the book Daniel s success which would have been impossible or close to during apartheid Thandwisa s lost and unavailable opportunities Their stories are told separately one after another but with periodic links back to other subjects to make the connections clearer Add to that dozens of supplemental interview and statistics read the endnotes to give a broader picture and you have a really interesting complex look at the way the end of apartheid has changed things in and for South Africa. After Freedom nonfiction best I received a free copy of this book via a Goodreads giveaway Nonfiction Social Sciences Like many who have written on the recent history of South Africa 1 the authors come away from their story with a strong sense of unease about the way in which the hope and promise of a post racial South Africa has been squandered in the face of political apathy by a generation that feels itself robbed of the promises of advancement that they felt their due Given the issues of political corruption and the decline of safety and the collapse of education and infrastructure in South Africa the authors see a great deal of insecurity even among those who have been well equipped through their education and family connections in contemporary South Africa For those who lacked such benefits there has been a rising sense of frustration with a lack of progress and an inability for an economy to provide jobs for those who want to work but are unable to find it and those are a huge portion of the South African population a worrisome level it must be admitted This book tells the stories of a variety of people in South Africa and explores the shared frustration with the way things are as well as with the wide gulf between how some of them have fared as opposed to others and the troublesome nature of the nation that they share. Book After freedompay This book is a bit less than 250 pages long and is divided into ten chapters that focus on various themes that are present in the lives of the people interviewed and studied by the authors all of whose names have been changed presumably so that they do not suffer repercussions for sharing information with the researchers The authors begin with a preface that explains the germ of their idea for this project before an introductory chapter that discusses the people that this book is about 1 After that the author looks at the legacies of apartheid explored from various perspectives 2 as well as the struggle for one of the women in particular to find work 3 and keep her mental health going The author explores the dilemma faced by successful blacks who are viewed as being coconuts for being white on the inside 4 as well as the way that coloureds have been forgotten in post apartheid South Africa 5 The authors look at the other side of the coloured divide at those who are doing well 6 discuss the question of how it is that people deal with the past being wrong but the past 7 as well as the movements and migrations to Cape Town and other cities and outside of South Africa and back 8 before the authors discuss the political anger of many of the people in the book 9 as well as the sad state of South Africa after freedom 10 The book ends with a note on terms and methods acknowledgements notes works cited and an index. After freedomain locals The authors are clearly cosmopolitan and liberal Westerners whose research was inspired and influenced by previous looks at societies struggling with deep racial divides like the American South in the first half of the 20th century That said the authors note that there were indeed great differences between the American South of the 1930 s and contemporary South Africa For one the education system of the United States was better than that of South Africa and there were a lot jobs available as well in a society moving out of the Great Depression and facing the expansion that comes from war and then consumer driven demand than is the case for a post industrial South Africa that struggles to find enough to do for its people in the face of massive mistrust and insecurity in the stability of small businesses and the atmosphere they work in And if the authors who are not inclined to be particularly pessimistic about a society they want to see succeed are so downcast about South Africa s glacial progress towards widespread well being the reader can scarcely be optimistic about such matters 1 See for example Nonfiction Social Sciences
