Book welcome to my country author

An interesting collection of autobiographical and ancestral stories that tell of the Yolnu people in north east Arnhem Land Australia The culture customs and philosophy of the people is explained both through detailed personal stories and short quotes or passages that read like sacred texts stating a belief and its context and significance It covers themes like the spiral of life continuing on through generations stories of the land animals and people the importance of kinship which gives everything meaning order and balance the value of sharing and respect especially the sharing of knowledge and customs and how a loved one is kept with us after death It also covers broader social and political issues like the land rights struggle which meant a great deal to the people and comes into their personal stories. Go to kindle home page Other snippets of personal lives are included in the first person narratives like when one woman had her first baby while still in school No value judgement is made rather an explanation of the women s ceremony that followed which would ensure that mother and baby would stay well It also includes how the people settle their own matters of justice as when one person wrongs another and must receive a spear wound to purge the wrongdoing It speaks of poison or avoidance relationships which must not be encouraged for example a man with his mother in law or a boy with his grandmother s niece Relationships are complex and quite fluid but nevertheless important especially where a father has children with several different women or a woman separates from her partner and her children are brought up by their grandmother. Book welcome to my country pdf One sad warning story goes into some detail about a girl who was raped by her grandmother s brother s wife s brother an avoidance relationship From a child s point of view there is too much detail about how the man first made himself known to her in the billabong then pretended to be injured later that night until she helped him and he raped her The moral of the story is to follow the Law do not trust that old man even though you know him. Welcome to my countrylife com 9781743313961 Another great book discussing Indigenous Australian culture and the Yolnu people s particular way of life It was an interesting blend of Dreamtime stories stories from Laklak s past and a tour through their daily life with the reader positioned as though they are present on the land with them The language is conversational making it a good book for kids as well Or older kids at least There s a kinda gnarly photo of a cooked turtle cut in half and a brief mention of rape in one of the stories that could freak out a younger kid or two 9781743313961 Come and spend some time with us at Bawaka Get a taste of what it is like at different times of the year and listen to our stories. Book welcome to my country by james patterson Laklak Burarrwanga and family invite you to their Country centred on a beautiful beach in Arnhem Land Its crystal waters are full of fish turtle crab and stingray to hunt the land behind has bush fruits pandanus for weaving wood for spears all kinds of useful things This country is also rich with meaning We can go anywhere and see a river hill tree rock telling a story Here too is Laklak s own history from her long walk across Arnhem Land as a child to her people s fight for land rights and for a say in their children s schooling She and her family stand tall a proud and successful Indigenous community. Book welcome to my country lyrics Welcome to My Country is a beautifully warm inviting experience As soon as I read When the moon goes past you can see its reflection in the water like the inside of your heart I knew this would be a very special read Being immersed in an experience is the way I would describe this book It is an enticing journey into the heart of Yolngu life in all its wonder across the physical artistic and spiritual world I love the conversational style we walk talk and sit down with family on every page Lovely Ros Moriarty author of Listening to Country Welcome to My CountryThis nicely illustrated and easy to understand book is a good introduction to some basic aspects of Yolnu culture and daily life in small community in Arnhem Land It is written in an accessible style for a young adult audience It uses direct language that is simple and clear with each story or idea presented in very short sections The conversational style of writing gives a sense of being there while listening to the stories While it was an easy read it felt very much like a superficial skim across the surface I thought this was probably the intention of the book to introduce you and encourage you to want to know 9781743313961 I want to let the world know about indigenous people I want us to share to exchange That s how Bawaka people are sharing knowledge with the world Indigenous non Indigenous When you read this book you will be able to go beyond what you hear on the television or from people who don t know You can be the one who learns two ways who can balance the two worlds together Laklak Burarrwa aIf you are going to read an Indigenous book this year or ever make it this one A beautiful raw and at times a heartbreaking read Thank you Laklak for sharing your story It was a privilege to read and learn from you From someone who has just moved to East Arnhem Land herself 9781743313961 I read this book for uni as I m study YA lit I found it such a wonderful educational and deeply touching way to understand Indigenous culture in Australia This book should be a set text in all Australian schools It is a significant book and something I wish politicians would read and rethink mining and other environmentally devastating travesties in this country 9781743313961 Excellent good quality book of 200 pages with many colour photos and lots of info Great for adults to0 9781743313961 A real page turner I couldn t put it down 9781743313961

, Book welcome to country Perhaps the book would be a good resource for teachers to select stories from to teach about an Arnhem Land community rather than giving it to a child to read straight through, Welcome to my countrycar In the Yolngu world we have a library in the land You can t destroy it If you burn it it grows again The land is full of knowledge than you can imagine.www.GoodReadingGuide
