Sleeping dogs book review I am curious as to what Leo etc are doing now 9781848271616 There s nothing sleepy about this novel It a good police procedural read When Harry Larkin dies Senior Ward Nurse Eveleen Morgan tells DI Leo Woods of Larkin s ramblings whilst he was in the ICU As a result Woods is dragged into an investigation of Larkin and his family and Harry Larkin s wife with whom he had a relationship with many years ago. Story of sleeping dogs The plot is credible and there is a good amount of emotional background twisting Leo s life and impinging on his credibility as a detective The story is set in Ireland.
Sleeping dogs book review
Sleeping Dogs is the second book in the DI Leo Woods series set in Dublin In this outing Leo is forced to revisit his past involvement with a criminal family through an investigation into the death of its patriarch and the disappearance of his daughter Initially the case seems like it might be relatively straightforward but it soon becomes clear that there is much to Harry Larkin s death than a simple shooting by a rival gang or a family feud including a couple of international connections As with the first outing Sleeping Dogs is an excellent tale with strong characterisation nicely portrayed social interactions and an intricate engaging plot There s plenty of backstory of the Larkins and Leo s past relations as well as the contemporary lives of the police characters inside and outside work And the case is an interesting multifaceted puzzle built around a somewhat dysfunctional family who have little trust in the police The only element that s somewhat subdued is the sense of place while located in Dublin there s little real sense of the city or Ireland generally and the tale could have been set just about anywhere Nonetheless a very fine police procedural 9781848271616 O Sullivan s debut novel Crocodile Tears made a strong impression on me last year and snapped at the heels of my final selection of the Top 5 crime reads of 2013 Introducing the slightly curmudgeonly and many layered police officer DI Woods I was struck by how O Sullivan circumvented the normal bog standard police procedural with his attention to characterisation and the literary quality to his prose throughout Sleeping Dogs has done little to undermine my initial favourable impressions of his writing once again giving rise to an extremely character driven story centred on the investigation of the shooting of local figure Harry Larkin Ultimately the whys and wherefores of this shooting is of little importance in the book as the cast of characters on both sides of the investigation provide the real strength of the book With the connection between DI Woods and Larkin established by their interactions some 30 years previously at the height of the Troubles Woods is caught offguard by Larkin s dying entreaties to find his missing daughter What transpires is an extremely engaging tale of dark family secrets and lies where the truth is hard to find causing Woods and his team to embark on a tricky and at times heart wrenching investigation Add into the mix an intriguing side plot involving a Libyan intern and his connection to Larkin s missing daughter Whitney a mixed up kid troubled by the dark goings on close to home and O Sullivan neatly enfolds us into a plot full of red herrings and partial truths Woods is as appealing as in the first embarking on a touching romantic interlude but in the footsteps of the lovelorn Inspector Morse doomed to disappointment His predominant sidekick DS Helen Troy provides not only a credible female detective but is a good sounding board for the intense Woods and the interplay between them is also an added point of enjoyment throughout A great follow up to a strong debut which I found interesting and different I hadn t read the first Leo Woods book but will definitely be doing so now. Sleeping dogs on switch I was given a copy of this book to review through Netgalley 9781848271616 Read this in virtually one sitting which did nowt for the trapped nerve in my spine but entertained me hugely Hugely individual characters whose interactions so fraught with misunderstanding on each other s part so well depicted by Mark O Sullivan set this above the average The complexities of plots from murders to who left the flowers took me a little while to keep up with which means I can read it again soon while I eagerly await the next in the series. Sleeping dogs new game plus Reading it a second time I found the final fifty pages several complexities too far Perhaps its me Before that I was entranced not least by the writing and several delicious phrases 9781848271616
