This is a most unusual artifact It s not a book in the traditional sense You won t be taking this to the dentists office or to the beach It s a work of art It s paper ephemera It is in all likelihood destined to be rather obscure scarce and surely of interest to the descrimination bibliophile I like it Just what in the heck is it Well it s prose penned by the publisher at Ex Occidente Press Dan Ghetu Dan elected to print his glistening words on a series of multi colored paper folded accordion style These leaves were then placed in a handmade printed matchbox Well matchbox may not be exactly the right word unless you remember Matchbox cars from the 1960s thus my slipcase designation The tray pushes easily to slide out of the box and both tray and box are illustrated and handmade Each of the copies we received is signed by the author on the side panel of the tray We re told that only 100 copies of this item have been produced and that only 50 have been offered for sale making it one of if not the most limited Ex Occidente productions ever Perhaps you remember Hanuman Books Hanuman produced an entire series of miniature books and some of them now sell for hundreds of dollars And now my last word I like it I think it s cool I think it will appreciate in value I believe that this kind of ephemera is what makes any collection distinctive and unique Dada Gnosis The review of this book posted elsewhere under my name is too impractical to post here Dada Gnosis A small intimate box signed by the author who is also the publisher six fold out booklets eleven pieces of immaculate prose poetry paying homage to several Romanian poets of the absurd of the ineffable of the numinous heart of Mystery The poets celebrated herein are true saints and heretics of a Gnostic tradition unknown even to those who maintain it They direct the courses of hidden streams which run deep beneath the surface of the earth and which determine the measures and proportions of forbidden architectures abandoned topographies and impossible geometries Gellu Naum Max Blecher Urmuz Emil Botta Benjamin Fondane Mehmet Niyazi and a handful of others are evoked to visible appearance on folded paper in such a way as to provide a sort of oracle And what an oracle it is The pieces themselves are simply stunning I find that they are best read separately each at a particular time of day according to a particular scheme which will have to be worked out by each reader for themselves aloud or in silence naked or clothed in ceremonial vestements The act of unfolding the paper may be accompanied by whatever ablutions or transgressions present themselves per the occasion the text may or may not determine the acts to follow or in a way much mysterious those preceding Whatever the case may be they are things of beauty and inspiration born in what can only be a deep abiding love of their subjects He writes noise with a pen dipped in the stillness of stars and speaks silence in order to save his soul. Dada Gnosis fiction vs Dada Gnosis is the first edition of the Fosforos Library hopefully to be followed by many further volumes indeed the publisher has indicated that this is the case Each edition is intended to be set on fire after the completion of the first reading perhaps as a sort of consummation between the reader and the spirit of the text Somehow I cannot quite bring myself to strike the match my excuse being simply that the first reading has not yet been completed The act of reading a text such as this must take place on several planes unfolding in various aspects of the reader s day to day existence so as to fulfill the oracular function for which it is so clearly intended as such it may be decades before I m finished Dada Gnosis There are few known examples of literary works that use divination systems as a essential structure form in narrative or poetic terms This is the case of Italo Calvino The Castle of Crossed Destinies 1973 created from possible interpretations of the card sequences that illustrate each story some of which appeared initially in an Franco Maria Ricci edition with splendid reproductions of a painted tarot deck designed by Bonifacio Bembo at the fifteenth century for the Milanese dukes Another example The Man in the High Castle 1962 the Philip K Dick alternate reality novel in which the I Ching the classical Chinese oracular text not only appears as a narrative device but as a resource for imbroglios solution with the story employed by the author More rare however are the cases in which a narrative or poetic work becomes itself an oracle absorbing the suggestive properties of divinatory arts texts images and symbols This is the Los San Signos case a kind of imagetic interpretative translation of I Ching by the Argentine polygraph Xul Solar into a new language invented by the author the Neocriollo colored by images taken from sources such as Dante s Divine Comedy This is also the case of Dada Gnosis by Dan Ghetu: Dada Gnosis paranormal tales Read the entire review Dada Gnosis
