Book i can transform you into a monster Mac Peterson feels like an old fashioned gumshoe set amid this dystopian dreamscape at odds with nearly everyone around him and seemingly always within a hair s breadth of getting kicked off the case and eschewed into further disgrace He aides Detective Aid Walter a bionically enhanced flatfoot with little humor and even less tolerance for Mac s methods the two make for a futuristic buddy cop duo minus the buddy I Can Transform You doesn t go for the pulpy feel but does offer up some darkly tinged mystery and the futuristic backdrop gives the kind of Blade Runner vibe that you re either going to love or hate. Book i can transform you into a monster I lean towards the former since Broaddus deftly captures Peterson s grief and turmoil in the wake of his ex wife s murder The guy is determined to solve the case but as he and Aid dig deeper into the case and the ramifications of where it leads Peterson realizes justice and reconciliation will be harder than expected. Book i can transform you into a monster Getting an idea for the world in which Peterson lived was a little hard to grasp at times visualizing the great spires of earth reaching into the sky felt so at odds with how the characters moved about sometimes I just had trouble picturing how easy or difficult for a society it would be to maneuver within and around these obstructions and just how pervasive they were on the planet The characters by contrast felt so much tangible that they came off the page with crystal clarity. Book i can transform you into a monster For fans of blending genres I Can Transform You does a heckuva job bringing a murder mystery to a futuristic setting that feels reminiscent of older books and movies yet completely original as a grand design You yourself may not be transformed but it s easy to see that Broaddus is getting better and better at this storytelling racket I Can Transform You I wasn t a fan of the other work by Maurice Broaddus I ve read and this didn t reaaaally change my mind I got it free from LibraryThing s giveaway program so I thought it d be worth trying anyway and there certainly were redeeming factors I liked his take on the buddy cop trope Ade is a pretty awesome character and some of his turns of phrase are just perfect. I can transform you lyrics But mostly there s something about his writing that just doesn t grab me I finished reading it out of a sense of obligation to finish a giveaway book than because I was really interested Sometimes short stories in general hit me like that though so maybe I might try another Maurice Broaddus novel some day I Can Transform You I only finished this because it was very short The plot was dumb and didn t hold together and the setting seemed to get in the way of and confuse the message Worse anything good about it just reminded me of much better books I Can Transform You I actually read an early electronic edition not the paperback listed here. Book i can transform you into a monster I felt Pimp My Airship was the stronger of the two stories here steampunk by way of P Funk and Public Enemy steamfunk set in Indianapolis A steampunk story which addresses class and race without easy answers Yes please I Can Transform You has a lot of the ex cop PI and buddy movie cliches but the relationship of Mac and Ade aka Spookbot and the revelation of what s really going on help distinguish it In fact Ade lecturing Mac about his self pity a was refreshingly mature and b makes me want to see a lot Ade stories I Can Transform You Mac Peterson is a private detective in a futuristic world where alien towers dot the scarred landscape and corruption is rife throughout the major city servants Addicted to Stim a stimulant drug of choice introduced to the populace as a way of stemming the growing tide of panic following the tower s appearance from beneath the surface he polices where police fail to go a victim of power and slave to his addition Mac s wife Kiersten a member of the Security Forces goes undercover to investigate the Easton MS crew as well as another organisation called the Carmillion Throughout the investigation she bonds with Harley Wilson who shares the same fate as Kiersten dead from an apparent suicide from atop one of the towers However Mac uncovers Kiersten s involvement in something which threatens the power brokers which could be the catalyst behind her death corruption cover ups and old fashion brawling ensue bringing this future tale into the present Maurice Broaddus waxes lyrical throughout I CAN TRANSFORM YOU not only in his depiction of the city dwellers predicament and secret society lifestyle but also in enveloping the reader in the world he s so deftly crafted. You can't change that lyrics I CAN TRANSFORM YOU follows the tried and true formula typical within the hardboiled genre yet brings the added element of sci fi noir No one eludes the grime which seeps into their character by virtue of their predicament There is an underlying hopelessness to Mac and Ade s investigative cause which not only exemplifies the noir feel but brings forth a sense of realism to the fantastical theme While a novella neither of which are connected to each other. I can transform you kindle to I Can Transform You was a fun cyberpunk story in a lot of ways it s quite cliched and over the top but that was both on purpose and quite entertaining especially since all the major characters were Black I liked the revelation of what was going on behind the case and it was quite strange. I can transform youhaul Pimp My Airship was a steampunk story where the US never got its independence and slaves weren t emancipated until much later Our main characters were rebels planning to break out a leader from prison but most of the story was just talking about their beliefs and showcasing some racial issues It was okay but I enjoyed I Can Transform You much better I Can Transform You Clich after clich after clich I can transform you is your typical noir mystery with a dead woman and a brooding cop who obviously happens to be her ex lover and the only one who can solve the murder Nothing new here Nothing. I can transform youhaul And the second story in the book Pimp my airship is even worse Who edited this book I don t think these two stories should be published unless under blackmail or something like that because the stories are not just boring and commonplace they are really bad written with an abyssal lack of talent. Book i can transform you into a monster Don t read it I Can Transform You Although it s not as innovative nor as immediately impressive as Plow the Bones the first book in the Apex Voices line there is a lot to like about I Can Transform You Maurice Broaddus has written a solid police procedural here with significant science fiction accents Personally I was hoping for of the reverse a solid science fiction story with police procedural accents but I ve tried not to let my expectations unduly influence my review. Book i can transform you into a monster The basic premise along with the setting really had me intrigued I mean a futuristic dystopia with alien towers rising above the clouds has a very Blade Runner sort of appeal to it Throw in a little synthetic drug addiction and an epidemic of suicides and you ve got a solid foundation on which to build a tale Unfortunately if there s one aspect where I found the story lacking it s in the way it never fully exploits that setting In fact if you were to remove a few world building scenes the story itself wouldn t suffer in any way It s a shame because there seemed to be such potential there but spectacle clearly wasn t Broaddus s intent here. I can transform you song As a sci fi tinged police procedural the story does work very well even if many of the elements are too familiar Mac is a down on his luck private investigator an ex cop who left the force after his conscience came into conflict with his career Ade on the other hand is a perfectly good cop but something of an outcast and a loner due to being part machine When the love of Mac s life falls victim to one of those mysterious suicides he tags along with Ade on the investigation adding something of the buddy cop genre to the private eye noir. I can transform youhaul Where the story really excels is in its ability to set and sustain a mood of dark hopelessness It s a grim sort of tale populated by men and women who have few aspirations beyond survival The odds seem stacked against Mac and Ade from the start but the two persevere as much to spite one another as anything else Theirs is a relationship that reminds me a lot of the first Lethal Weapon movie where a little dark humor and shared agony served to fill the void of suicidal dread and weary resignation that lay at the core of those reluctant partners. Book i can transform you into a monster The story is told very well maintaining that noir ish feel throughout While I would have liked to see in terms of world building the glimpses of future technology and the problems it creates are varied and creative enough to keep you grounded in the griminess of tomorrow Both main characters are well developed with great back stories and the dialogue is extremely effective in conveying some valuable context to what s happening Finally the story itself takes a few interesting turns leading to a resolution that actually managed to surprise me. I can transform you lyrics Originally reviewed at Beauty in Ruins I Can Transform You I have been meaning to read this author for a number of years but other books seemed to always make their way to the top of my TBR pile But after reading I Can Transform You I will not make that mistake again This was a an immersive sci fi experience steeped in a noir mystery Engaging characters and a unique set up I found myself wanting than just a novella Hopefully Mr Broaddus who is known for his horror and urban fantasy books takes another stab at the world he created here I for one will gladly be along for the ride I Can Transform You I Can Transform You is an excellent speculative fiction novella leaning towards the science fiction side of the spectrum Broaddus doesn t waste time setting the stage and the reader is thrown straight into the action from the opening page. Book i can transform you into a monster Unfortunately I didn t connect well with the main character Mac This isn t a weakness in the writing the character had plenty of depth and nuance It s a matter of personal taste and we re all going to have some we connect to easily than others Mac just wasn t someone I clicked with easily. I can turn you into poetry I was intrigued by the secondary character Ade and I d love to see something else where Ade had the main role and I could get to know him better But that s wishful thinking on my part although it s very possible Broaddus has something else out there I ve not read yet Or maybe he s got of Ade in the works hint hint The story has a hint of mystery and a lot of twists and turns It s the kind of writing that keeps my mind engaged and alert putting everything together and doesn t let it wander off which is always a bonus when I m reading for pain relief and distraction. I can transform youd daily life As an extra bonus this volume also includes the original Pimp My Airship short from which the novel I previously reviewed and loved derived As a writer myself I found it fascinating to see how the characters had grown and changed from this earlier version to the full length one and which pieces survived the revision or less intact I definitely prefer the full length version but this is well worth the read as it stands. I can transform youhaul 5 stars but I think this is a reflection of the lingering high from having been blown away by the full length Pimp My Airship as well as the Do Not Go Quietly anthology I don t want everything I read to impact me as much as those two did otherwise my head would expand like an overinflated balloon and I d seriously get a headache from the high pressure of ideas and the bruising from banging the unwieldy brain on everything But when those two are still stuck in my subconscious it is hard not to draw comparisons within the genre I Can Transform You.
