Red Pill Views The Fake Celebrity in ChinaFor some reason I am blocked from reviewing on Kindle from where I purchased it so heres my review According to the reviews on this book is like Marmite you will love it or you will hate it You take your pick Like Black I live and work in China and at time of writing I still do Consequently I recognise much of what he writes as truisms The people he meets.
The author s first novel a fictional tale of debauchery sex booze and drugs which follows the experiences of an English teacher in China during the happy boom times when China won the right to host the Olympics and was accepted into the World Trade Organization The book also describes the author s time in Beijing during the SARS epidemic Written in a frank but humorous style this work provides many insights into modern Chinese society The book caused the author to be told to leave China the situations he finds himself in the girls the boys the food the customs the strangeness of it all well we ve all been there Some will find the sex and the attitudes shocking I myself dislike the casual racism of my colleagues who at the drop of a hat will blame the Chinese rather than look to themselves Black does address some of these failings some of which he sees in himself He raised some deep and interesting questions about modern China and who we as foreigner economic migrants even interact with that society He is also frank about his sex life and the girls he meets and discards along the way expats have a phrase for it Yellow Fever If I might just spend a moment blowing my own trumpet about my own experiences if you search for Doctor X in China my memoir you will get another different insight and probably be just shocked or entertained I was certainly entertained by this book and read through it in a couple of days as I had a couple of long train journeys to do I recommend it for any armchair traveller or those of you brave and adventurous enough to come and join us in the Middle Kingdom Robert Black
