Democracy and the Student Left was written by George F Kennan published by Atlantic Monthly Press and was printed in 1968 in a Hardcover binding Democracy and the Student LeftThis is a hard book to rate as it consists of a speech delivered by Kennan responses to that speech and finally Kennan s rebuttal If I could give Kennan one star and the letter writers a full five I would Kennan s speech printed in the New York Times in January 1968 is characteristic of that peculiar genre of 1960s composition and rhetoric wherein middle aged white men pontificate on topics they readily admit to knowing nothing about Kennan says than once that he is not an expert which rather begs the question why he felt a need to open his mouth in the first place In this case it s the New Left and broader student movements of the late Sixties Kennan s position amounts to catchall contempt for everyone from SDS to the hippies whom he largely characterizes as a group of unthinking agitators who ought to be paying better attention to their studies and not butting into the grown up world of politics It s almost worth reading however simply for what follows namely 100 pages of letters from students parents professors and preachers writing to the editor for the express purpose of ripping Mr Kennan a new one In the process they demonstrate exactly the sort of incisive and level headed thinking which Kennan claims they lack and ultimately come off as considerably mature and better considered than Kennan and his hyperbolic repudiation of the student activists he clearly has made no real attempt to understand His response is unfortunately every bit as obstinately self righteous as the original speech in the first few pages alone he proves to the reader that he has read the thoughtful letters mailed to him with almost total disregard and can only lament that the writers lack a sense of humor The ultimate impression is that Kennan is guilty of exactly the pig headed ignorance he attributes to the student activists while they have proved themselves significantly thoughtful empathetic and willing to participate in a real dialogue across the infamous generation gap It s an object lesson in communication breakdown unfortunately familiar 50 years later 239 best book ever so it went 239
