As is all 1800 s classic horror I believe this story to be happening on a date The narrator is bored on this date so she asks Runciman if he believes in ghost She knows he a story teller and a man who loves reaction from his stories so she has no doubt this will bring life to their boring date The story Runciman tells is a story of him visiting a lonely friend who is overjoyed by his presence So overjoyed to the point it physical touch which Runciman is a little uncomfortable with I see that discomfort as denial I think the friend he visits killed his wife he did not love because he is gay When he meets Runciman he is immediately attracted to him and is very pleased with his company There are many scenes where the two become close Runciman even jokes about their closeness and says they were acting like lovers.

Let me analyze this like it s english class This short story is full of allusions and symbolism but they were just acting in terror Maybe they were And maybe they found comfort in each other They share intimate moments of opening up about their feelings I think either this friend i forgot his name is haunted by his dead wife because she knows his secret that s probably why she was so mad or he is haunted by his guilt I also think inferring this story being told on a date with a woman makes it even likely that Runciman is homosexual He s on a date with a woman along with the discomfort from earlier can be interpreted as denial He also mentions he is still not engaged which we can also come to a conclusion why The lady is bored by this date So she asks an outlandish question which he replies with a long story of him and a man Although it s never said in the story this is story about a man who is scared to face his sexuality It s okay to accept your feelings and embrace who you are This is something that our generation has normalized so it makes a lot of sense for story written 200 years ago to no have a character not comfortable with the terms of his preferences Mrs Lunt
