Dark skies book 3

Having watched and thoroughly enjoyed the Dark Skies TV series I was both surprised and delighted to see that the series had received an official guidebook despite its short run Published in the UK when the series was broadcast there in 1997 I was intrigued to see what insights it might offer about the program even so after I received a commission to write an unofficial book about the series due out in March 2019 While the book awards insights at a sporadic rate on the whole it s an underwhelming work The guide s 176 pages find it divided into three sections The first and by far longest takes up 100 of those pages and amounts to plot summaries of the first eleven episodes that is The Awakening through The Warren Omission Perhaps this is what the book s subtitle meant by the first series For those who ve seen the series the summaries offer little than regurgitations of the plot Odd details come out such as what those pods grown in We Shall Overcome were for yet errors crop up such as Bach a Navy captain in the series suddenly becoming an Army colonel for the length of the summary of Ancient Future That the majority of the text was given over to such a lengthy recounting seems odd in retrospect especially with errors and omissions left in place. Dark skies book 3 The second portion covering about fifty pages is a self described Encyclopedia of Dark Skies The listings here comprise the usual topics of UFO lore from grays to Roswell as well as elements from the series mythology such as the Hive and various characters There s also an inclusion of historical figures 1960s pop culture figure and organizations as well that perhaps fill in some historial context for viewers unaware of the history the series often incorporated And yet even here the book goes off on odd tangents with entries on people and events the series neither features nor even references as part of its narrative The results are intriguing at times especially for hints of storylines the series never explored yet also frustrating. Dark Skies kindle reader Last but not least is a behind the scenes section There are profiles of the show s two lead characters alongside the actors who played them a look at the writers and executive producers of the program and quick pieces on the special effects employed in the program as well as the challenges of recreating the period settings that took the series across America Though a combination of puff pieces and insights this is arguably the most successful segment of the guide. Dark skies yorkshire dales Where does that leave the book If you re a die hard Dark Skies fan who doesn t already have one of the few pieces of licensed merchandise based on the program it s probably worth getting There is the occasional nugget of interest tucked away in its 176 pages On the other hand there s an almost phoned in feeling to the book at times which alongside the fact it only covers half of the episodes made make it disappointing at the same time So perhaps it s a curiosity than anything else Chris Byman
