Summer Day kindle books The setting is a hill farm on the border between England and Wales on a summer day in 1947 The story follows Henry s increasingly desperate attempts to evade capture and the inept and amateurish efforts of family and neighbours to find him and explain that his father s injuries are not life threatening and that no one holds him responsible. Summer days and other stories Each member of the family has his or her own fears and worries for the future and these influence their behaviour throughout the long sultry day as storm clouds gather Henry s older brother.
Contemporary Summer daylight
Henry s situation seems to become worse and worse through simple injuries to him and a violent rainstorm The tension in the story is as tight as any thriller and you cannot help but worry about this frightened lad I was rooting for him from start to finish breathing a sigh of relief after the final few paragraphs The author manages to capture the innermost fears and worries of all of the major characters The dialogue makes sense and reveals an authentic picture of this rural community Recommended reading to anyone who enjoys a story of family and small village societies Summer Day An expertly crafted village drama.

Summer dayze beauty
Summer Day is a real slice of post war country charm with so many interesting characters all busy living their lives unaware of the drama surrounding one small boy and his dog A boy with problems who acts rashly on impulse and cannot cope with what he thinks is the outcome The author drops the reader into the drama right at the beginning and you barely have time to catch your breath before the building tension takes it away again. Summer dayz logo The author has such a lovely writing style so detailed and descriptive and I loved the idea of giving the characters their own chapters it kept the tension moving forward and let you become a part of their lives. Summer Day epub file Such a beautifully sad story and one I heartily recommend The author manages to put you inside the mind of a terrified boy and you feel every emotion with him Summer Day A story with multiple points of view can become a booby trap for the unwary author Fortunately in this case we have a writer who has invested time and effort The imagery atmosphere and suspense are also evidence of a person who takes pride in their craft. All summer in a day book Each chapter is created using the point of view of an individual character and their ongoing part in the unfolding story Not only is this a superb vehicle for perspective but it helps adjust pace. Book summary dataset If I had one concern it would not be the story but the extensive blurb I would respectfully suggest that it could be reduced to two or three short statements and perhaps two open questions. Book summary dataset I would normally be critical about the lack of use of contractions or the overuse of local dialect in dialogue but again the author s skill came to the fore In the region of England in the post war era it would not only be acceptable but expected to hear speech as used in this story. Summer Day fiction meaning When considering the countryside community the era and the general mindset of the people young Henry s plight is touching and realistic An absorbing and entertaining tale Summer Day One day of a boy and his dog in postwar EnglandI liked this quaint boy and his dog tale set on a farm in post war England a lot than I thought I would The author managed to make a day into a book granted with flashbacks and back stories but it is well done I was especially anxious to learn what happens to Henry. Summer Day kindle paperwhite The word bitch used about a hundred times Where s the bitch Put down the bitch Henry and his bitch and on and on and on Of course the author is talking about a dog though I don t recall the actual term dog ever being used. Fiction Summer dayz Yes I am well aware the term is used to define a female dog It is also and most commonly used today as a pejorative slang word for a woman This is 2020 not 1945 or whatever Using this term over and over is not going to endear the book to any young readers especially females What is wrong with calling a dog a dog For these reasons what would probably have been four stars gets cut to three Summer Day I received an ARC of Summer Day and had the privilege of reading about Henry and his plight I was immediately drawn in by the author s writing style which for me reads much like Henry James or Charles Dickens with his attention to detail and his descriptive lyrical method of writing I also enjoyed the multiple points of view as a means of carrying the story forward It is creative and also keeps the reader interested and intrigued on what the next character s thoughts will be or what could possibly happen next While reading about the small village and farm Henry stems from I experienced a small taste of nostalgia as Henry s life on a dairy farm brought back memories of my childhood spent at my grandparents dairy Sweet memories smells and sounds that I had completely forgotten about until reminded of them Overall an interesting heart felt read that leaves your heart yearning for poor Henry and his family to come together and overcome a devastating accident that turns their worlds upside down Summer Day Summer Day is a real slice of post war country charm with so many interesting characters all busy living their lives unaware of the drama surrounding one small boy and his dog A boy with problems who acts rashly on impulse and cannot cope with what he thinks is the outcome The author drops the reader into the drama right at the beginning and you barely have time to catch your breath before the building tension takes it away again. Summer dayz logo The author has such a lovely writing style so detailed and descriptive and I loved the idea of giving the characters their own chapters it kept the tension moving forward and let you become a part of their lives. Book summer holiday 2024 Such a beautifully sad story and one I heartily recommend The author manages to put you inside the mind of a terrified boy and you feel every emotion with him Summer Day Bess a Welsh Collie sheepdog is old and ailing Jack her owner has decided it is time to put her down His young son Henry in trying to prevent this causes the gun to go off injuring Jack Believing that he is responsible for his father s death Henry runs away Cecil wants to have a bigger say in management of the farm like his mother his sister Margery is preoccupied with planning her forthcoming marriage His aunts too have problems that demand attention. Summer break day book Assorted professionals have their own distorted view of the family and of Henry the family Doctor the district nurse the vicar the school teacher Henry meanwhile faces an increasing number of set backs and injuries which lead him to make a near fatal decision Rescue finally comes from a surprising quarter Summer DaySynopsis Bess a Welsh Collie sheepdog is old and not well and her owner Jack decides it is time to put her down But his young son Henry tries to stop Jack shooting Bess and in the ensuing accident Jack gets injured Henry thinks he has killed his father and he and Bess run away together The scene is set for a day in which the family and neighbours try and find the two of them It is set just after the Second World War on a hill farm in the border country between England and Wales Review I really liked this beautiful short novel with its local dialect and sense of village drama It is really well written with many voices being included in the book including family members and neighbours All s well in the end and I really liked both the physical setting and the sense of an era just after the war when people lived in very modest circumstances and families looked out for themselves and for those close by I do recommend this I also loved the writing about both landscape and the inner thoughts of the characters The hero is also well drawn and dialect used sparingly although it conjures up the area very well For lovers of village dramas and multiple viewpoints This was received as a review copy in return for an honest review Summer Day Summer Day by Frank Parker is one ambitious and determined novel covering a single day in post war rural Britain It introduces a number of social themes and cultural changes that were prominent at the time and within it brings in a clash between the old ways and the new. Book summer holiday The most striking feature in Summer Day is the multiple POVs It is not easy to write a novel that spans multiple points of view and I have read others that are ambitious in scope but fail to deliver in terms of writing an overarching and well written story Parker however delivers where others have failed as each member of the family has their own viewpoint and within it they have a unique opinion and voice I greatly enjoyed the way that the author went about revealing little bits of information based upon the person s perspective which gave the book enough surprises and revelations to keep me reading. All summer in a day book cover The writing style is engaging and descriptive with a good and varied sentence structure Having grown up in rural England myself I could relate to the setting and the characters and some of the local terminology I heard in years past really made me laugh Within all of this the tension around Henry and his family and the failure to understand Henry s issues really drive home the sadness of the plot It is dramatic and exhausting but brilliantly crafted at the same time Summer Day is a labour of love and it shows To cram such an engaging story and characters into such as short book is truly magnificent Summer Day This review can also be found on edwardrickford. On the first day of summer vacation book com and When I first read the book blurb for Summer Day I have to admit I did not think I would find the book all that interesting Social history has never really been my cup of tea when it comes to history books and that s true even for novels Moreover I did not care all that much for the time period When it comes to British history I usually enjoy stories set sometime between 1776 1945 and Summer Day is just outside that time range Despite my reservations I decided to give the book a read anyway Much to my surprise I enjoyed it a great deal. Summer Day fiction vs When I read historical fiction I like to feel as if I am learning something This is difficult with social history as it tends to be amorphous and I generally prefer stories that revolve around a documented event While Summer Day doesn t revolve around a well known historical event it was still a compelling read because it revolves around an interesting ethical dilemma It would be difficult to explain that dilemma without getting into spoilers but long story short the protagonist feels obligated to leave home following a traumatic incident His family and the larger community are somewhat in the dark as to why he has left and the process by which they discover the truth gives the novel a great deal of narrative power. Book summary dataset In some respects it reminded me of the old story about the blindfolded men and the elephant By the middle of the story the blindfolds have been lifted and the people who groped the elephant are forced to confront their initial assumptions By the end of the story however they are doing much than revisiting their old assumptions they are rushing to avert a crisis brought on in part by their bad assumptions I think it makes for a great storyline and I really liked the way everything came together at the end Additionally I enjoyed the depiction of rural life in the mid 20th century and have to applaud the author for his research Having said all that the ending of Summer Day was a tad too abrupt in my opinion I think the problem could be remedied easily enough an epilogue could help provide a bit closure and have no major complaints otherwise Assuming the author can craft a good epilogue I think Summer Day may end up being remember as one of his strongest works The book is a quick fast paced read and I recommend it to readers interested in ethical dilemmas post WWII British history and coming of age stories Summer Day This historical fiction book takes place during the 1940s after the end of World War 2 As someone born during that period I found Summer Day a most interesting read Henry is a young boy who flees away from a traumatic situation involving his father Jack and Bess a Welsh Collie who was retired from being a working sheepdog Henry is extremely fond of Bess and considers her to be his close friend. Fiction Summer dayton Throughout the story we become aware of his extended family s various impressions about Henry This affects their concerns about him when he appears to have become lost somewhere around the extensive Hereford farmland where he lives Some of them are worried while others complain about his behaviour All of this time the reader is privy to Henry s fears And you can understand why he does not wish to be found. EPub Summer dayforce Many outsiders also become involved in the situation such as a district nurse his schoolteacher and a doctor Meanwhile over many hours Frank Parker s Summer Day is a charming and delightfully written snapshot of postwar Britain among the rural villages and farming communities in and around the Herefordshire border between England and Wales Part of this snapshot brings alive the huge social changes that were taking place at the time the newly elected Labour government s raising of the school leaving age and the effect that had on local communities where a youngster s life was pretty much already pre determined the changing and conflicting social attitudes of the time and even a reference to to the spread of mains electricity Getting back to the main story though right from the start the reader is drawn into an intense scenario rewarded by an unexpected and what appears to be a climactic and tragic ending to the first chapter What follows are the circumstances leading up to and surrounding the events of that short opening chapter in which the truth gradually emerges surrounding an accident and tragic misunderstanding during which neighbours and family pull together in the search for Henry a young boy widely regarded by locals as not quite right in the head Secondary to the main story we learn that there is much to Henry than most people even his parents give him credit for. Summer break day book Throughout the story we are introduced and return to a variety of characters ranging from the ageing but dedicated village vicar who refuses to give up riding his bicycle a District Nurse who has helped bring most of the local youth into the world including Henry and who provides some insight into why Henry is the way he is and an opinionated Headteacher stuck in his ways to name but a few Others include Henry s parents and other family members followed by an assortment of friends and neighbours often when an author introduces a large number of characters it can become confusing with the peripheral characters coming across as a bit one dimensional but the author has skilfully breathed life and substance into every last one each by way of their own story and circumstances playing their part in the bigger picture and driving the story forward and although I was completely hooked on the unfolding drama of the search for Henry part of what really brought this story to life were these other character s backdrop stories many of which could feasibly warrent a book or short story in their own right. All summer in a day as a science fiction Elements of the characters the vivid depictions of rural everyday life and the time period put me in mind of Laurie Lee s Cider with Rosie Sadly books such as this don t appear as often as they once did possibly because of the passage of time and the inevitably diminishing pool of writers with sufficient personal experience to draw on. Story all summer in a day An unexpected literary gem and as fine and enjoyable a book as I ve read all year Summer Day

Lol surprise summer dayz
Taking Bess with him Thus begins what could turn out to be the last day of Henry s young life. Summer day song However there are two aspects that really cut into my enjoyment The lack of ebook formatting There are no chapter separations the whole book is one big blob flowing together. Pdf summary ai His first Frank Parker s writing has been likened to that of Laurie Lee Ian McEwan and Charles Dickens Not bad for a septuagenarian who came to writing late in life
