Stibbe and Riley Fusion by Scott J Toney I received a free copy of this book through Smashwords in exchange for an honest review Bear with me as I do a review of each of the books Dee Harrison The Sliver of Abilon Junah the Mirrorsmith seeks out fragments of mirrors to be safely destroyed before these slivers infect humans causing death or madness A plague occurs in Abilon and he goes to investigate 3 stars I m not a huge fan of this style of fantasy scifi but I did enjoy this story It s tough to develop character in a short story but Junah was likable and his quest to stop the plague and find the slivers of contaminated mirrors that came through the planet gateways to infect people was an interesting concept and not one that I had seen before.

And during the crisis itself and both are likable characters The zombie incidents are nicely written with plenty tension and a little bit of gore to keep horror fans happy This was the best story in the book and a prequel to zombie novel Odium Scott J Toney Novafall The essence of dead planets once invited into the human body give the host great powers but using the powers drains their life away bit by bit 1 star. Fusion public adjusters dallas tx I found this story very confusing and not to my taste at all It starts with a man called Ineal and we get a bit about his back story as he crashes down to a planet with the alien essence Then we never hear of him again A man appears later called Ivanus with no back story I wondered if the author during a new draft had decided to change the name of the character and forgot to do a complete edit Then there was the jumping back and forward between present and past which was not always clear I didn t like the way it was written.

Well developed Cara Goldthorpe Capturing Perfection A greedy man marries a talented artist and forces her to draw things for him to pass off as his own to make him rich 2 stars. Fusion bookkeeping I just never got into this story at all There was nothing wrong with the way the story was written it just wasn t my thing I m not interested in art or painting and I m not interested in love stories so I didn t expect this to be a favourite C. Fusion 360 student Standout stories here include Riley Amberlake and Haig although I was already familiar with their work The pleasant surprise for me came with Dee Harrison s story that left me eager to get to know a lot of her work Fusion does what it says on the tin and is a mix of stories from sci fi fantasy Roman mythology and hard detective fiction with some zombies and ghosts thrown in for good measure Do I want to read from these authors Hell yes Fusion by Scott J Toney I found Fusion to be an entertaining read Lots of different genres and writing styles As with any anthology some stories were better than others and there were a couple I found it hard to get into but then enjoyed them as I read on I m sure it had something to do with those stories not being genres I typically read Of course there were stories that were wonderful and two of my favorites were the suspense story Until the Ninth Hour by CMT Stibbe and the zombie short Life Ever After Nina s Story by Claire C Riley This last is a prequel to Ms Riley s upcoming novel Odium and I can t wait to read it I ll be looking for from some of these authors but especially which is always nice The side characters that we meet on his journey are all interesting in their own ways and add to the story It s hard to say much without giving away the story but I liked the way the plot moved on If anything perhaps I d have liked it to be a bit longer just to get some action and tension into it I would certainly look at by this author and would maybe look at any other books set in this world Ivan Amberlake Diary of the Gone A social misfit who is haunted by the dead has to investigate when students at his school start to go missing with only his diary to protect him 3 stars Full review here Claire C Riley Life Ever After Nina and Ben are on the verge of divorce when the zombie apocalypse comes When their plan to stay safe in their house fails they must make a run for it to try and reach safety 4 stars Really enjoyed this story I felt that this was a very realistic look at how an ordinary couple would deal with a sudden zombie outbreak Do we stay at home and wait for help or risk a road trip to get to the country What do we take What do we need Can the zombies get in It made me think about what I would want to do in that situation Nina and Ben are nicely developed through their interaction with each other before the zombies arrive described or structured and gave up halfway through it Mindy Haig Cybilla A man falls in love with a muse who is trapped in another dimension and goes on a quest to deem himself worthy to rescue her 3 stars This was the surprise of the book for me I m not a romance type person and that is what the blurb sounded like but it was so much than that Our hero is obsessed with his muse who can only visit him for limited times before returning to where she is captive Other men have tried and failed to complete a mythological quest to find and claim her The quest was fascinating testing him in different ways and I was caught up in the story Beautifully written which is chilling and we get a tension filled side story developing as we follow the victim s father going to confront the man who took his daughter Chilling sad touching all the same time Very well written and will look out for work in this genre by the author. Fusion fantasy meaning Although difficult to review the collection as a whole without going into detail on my thoughts on each specific story within I can honestly say that almost every one of these stories does a tremendous job of showcasing the talents of the author that wrote it I ve only read one of the novels by the authors in here so I can t say for certain of their talents in the full length novel format but I can say that they all seem to be able to capture the moments contained within their short stories with deft prose creating a world and crafting characters with as few words as possible so as to allow the greater story to shine through. Earliest science fiction Since this is a free book although I believe I actually paid a buck for it on so I didn t have to do the work to copy it over to my Kindlelazy there s really nothing to lose in giving this book a shot as I m confident you ll find than one author you ll want to read from Fusion by Scott J Toney Written in the first person narrative this hauntingly beautiful tale tells the story of Oren Gale a musician who seeks his muse Cybilla Gale has loved this beautiful woman since the moment she first came to his dream. the seaweed stench of Abilon The foul odour tickled the back of his throat and he gagged on a rise of bile Mirrorsmith Guild protocol demanded that he preview his destination before he arrived but it could not prepare him for an assault on his other senses He vomited onto the trackway just thankful that there was no one to witness his most pitiful entrance ever He loathed the smell of mouldy greens it stirred up too many reminders of his wretched childhood in the back alleys of Varna largest city on his homeworld of Vargo but this was kabbige soup intensified tenfold When his heaving subsided Junah sank down onto his rump trying to ignore the early evening dew which was soaking into his leggings He pulled a kerchief from his belt purse to wipe the spittle from his lips and cursed this ill favoured world Sissik his wail chittered and scurried around him like a silver furred cyclone mewing her distress Junah winced when she skipped onto his tender stomach the better to peer into his face with her large prosimian eyes He ran a finger down her spine and she slowly relaxed beneath his touch Junah ill She sent No I m fine Little One he reassured her He grimaced The smell caught me out that s all Sissik wrinkled her own nose Nasty nasty stink she concurred Junah delved into his purse a further time and extracted a couple of lozenges from a packet A few chews later and he could smell nothing Next time I ll take em before I get here he promised out loud Not that there ll be a next time Junah clambered to his feet and peeled the sodden fabric from his buttocks Sissik took her accustomed place on his shoulders hiding beneath his long dark hair and curled around his neck like a fur collar Wails were native to all the worlds of the Regium even the undeveloped ones like Abilon Some wails the silver furred ones like Sissik were prized for their ability to generate the acoustic frequencies that Mirrorsmiths depended upon Others the plumper browner ones made good eating Whenever Sissik irritated him which was often Junah threatened to dye her coat russet Now however she was quiescent understanding that it was time for work The wayportal part of the network of gates that connected all the worlds of the Regium had opened between a pair of standing stones that dominated the headland to the north of Abilon Junah looked down at the coastal town which nestled within the arms of a sheltering bay A slash of fire on the horizon marked where the sun was setting and silhouetted the ugly squat fortress guarding the harbour mouth Somewhere among the sleazy alleyways of this provincial rats nest below was the inn where his contact waited It was supposed to be a routine mission according to Teren Lemmick Guild Master but also his oldest friend All Junah had to do was locate the sliver of Desecrated Mirror secure it then return it to the Mirrorsmiths Guild on Vargo where it could be destroyed in relative safety He had carried out scores of such grabbits but this time unease pricked his spine Mirrorsmiths tended towards the superstitious and worlds like Ysreal with its triple moons were considered inauspicious but this went deeper than that Junah s senses were trained to detect distorted vibrations and this place was riddled with them probably due to the presence of the sliver Sissik s tail tightened around his neck so he dampened down his disquiet Wails were sensitive to heightened emotion He checked his accoutrements once then headed for Abilon thinking it best to get this trip over with as quickly as possible Despite the lateness of the hour the streets of Abilon were crowded Every third house seemed to be selling ale and shabby ill visaged townsfolk bumped and barged their way through the densely packed lanes Junah knew roughly where the inn lay but he had previewed it during daylight and it took him a while to reach the waterfront He spent a few minutes reconnoitering then pulled his hood up and entered the tavern Not surprisingly most of the patrons were fishermen and the uneven floorboards must have made them feel right at home Junah jostled his way through the raucous hubbub towards the booth where he had arranged to meet his accomplice but an overripe blousy serving girl intercepted him Fusion by Scott J Toney.
