Tapping into family history Elster tells the story of a Detroit family after a decade of the Great Depression The Ford family owns a successful wood delivery business which enables them to live comfortably although their life means a lot of hard work Douglas the dad buys scrap lumber from local factories cuts it into usable sizes and delivers it far and wide May the mom spends her summers preserving fruits and vegetables not just feeding her own family but caring for her community Elster s main storyline taps into what travel looked like for Black families visiting the folks back home After May hears of a massive flood back home in Clarksville Tennessee she decides to go back and see her own family make sure they re okay Taking her daughters with her they travel from Michigan Central Station down to Clarksville but along the way they must change from first class to the colored car The experience traumatizes Patsy the oldest girl who has been raised in ignorance of the de jure racism in the south This experience hammers home the full spectrum of insults and discrimination that Black families had to deal with and process in daily life Further episodes include an Italian fruit seller who sells the Ford family spoiled fruit When Douglas calls him out a long term vendetta ensues drawing the whole neighborhood into the fray While this story takes place in the later part of the 1930s the prejudice faced by the Ford family has never simply disappeared It has lessened perhaps but it has also twisted itself into new ever subtle forms. The color calico How Patsy deals with her collision with a new reality is the focus of the second half of the book Her grandmother gives her fabric to start her first quilt a Fence Rail quilt She tells her granddaughter that she is to put all her pain into the quilt When the quilt is completed she will be free of the bad memories.
