Dissonance in a minor meaning
The fragile but persevering lives of the downtrodden and the frustrations of seemingly unattainable dreams that artists endure She handles the lesbian relationships with sincerity and dignity and allows us to visualize every character she creates in this striking melodrama She has style and the gift for transforming potentially grim situations into moments of life experiences we all could do well to heed She seems to present a promise for becoming a fine young writer Grady Harp 244 Let me just start by saying that I m not an avid reader It s hard for me to get through a book without falling asleep.
Dissonance in a minorgame piano
The inner dialogue changes from very straight forward to a poetic flow that is incredibly easy to relate to What I loved was that it did not completely circle around Rainn and Jaselle s relationship like most lesbian books but that it was about Rainn s life which happened to include Jaselle It s a great read even if you re not gay What I love THE MOST was that this book made me FEEL It has been quite a long time since a book made me think and feel strong emotions I got lost in the world of Rainn At one point my head was spinning from all the emotions I felt from all the hardships that the main character was going through It left me thinking I accidentally left the book open on my computer at some chapter in the middle and when I went to close it.

Occurs around twenty seven times Add the word as an index to the deeper troubles riding in the subtext of this novel and pair it with the vivid and very ominous descriptions and the reader drops into a hellish place and often has to ask the question Is this the end Does Rainn have a way out One passage in particular shows us Disney working full throttle to create rhythm and beat using another rhetorical device Repetition We re just friends We ve never done anything Nothing matters Nothing sinks in And she s using again She s dying again She s crying again She s screaming again She s sick again She s shaking again You re on the curb again.

Nicole is a lifelong storyteller who is happiest when exploring the hidden corners of life She lives in Denver Colorado where she is a collector of jobs that inspire her writing She has worked as a 911 operator police dispatcher and martial arts instructor Nicole loves words that hit hard and stories that linger She has written literary fiction contemporary LGBT short stories and flash fiction. Dissonance in a minor book Rainn never meant to fall in love and definitely not with a meth addict Living in the alley is dangerous but she s found the beauty in having nothing to lose It s also provided her the focus to single mindedly pursue her only dream Though controlling her wild bandmates is an unrelenting struggle Rainn knows they re close to breaking out of their dive bar and into the real music scene But Jaselle is the only one who doesn t see Rainn as the homeless girl Jaselle s ability to look past the ripped clothes and into the meaning of Rainn s lyrics makes her worth the emotion Rainn has trained herself not to feel But as Rainn is coming out of her emotional coma Jaselle is falling into numbness desperation and dependence on the drug that s taking everything from her Rainn already lost her brother Michael when he died of asphyxiation from huffing butane She thinks she already knows this road Hoping to succeed where she failed before Rainn devotes herself to saving Jaselle But the drug is smarter than she thinks and soon she s faced with adversity she could never have prepared for putting both their souls and lives on the line Dissonance in A MinorA minor is much suitable for expressing the sad effect than other minor keysNicole Disney makes an impressive literary debut with DISSONANCE IN A MINOR a story with Orpheus connotations but in the voice of a female Writing about the homeless people of the streets can be discomforting unless the gift for creating atmosphere and compassion surfaces and Disney makes this happen She deals with dark subjects in a manner that avoids bathos but instead allows the reader to understand the plight of those people who have fallen out of favor with social norms and have survived in a manner that would challenge the toughest warrior. Dissonance in a minor book 2 Rainn grew up in a family who cherished classical music hoping Rainn would embrace the piano as a classical pianist and that her brother Michael would continue violin lessons and become a prominent violinist Neither happened Michael succumbed to asphyxiation from inhaling butane and Rainn ran away from classical music to form a hard rock band The Suicide Angels who perform now and then at Benny s bar which they have renamed The Chapel waiting for that moment of discovery by someone Brad who can start them in the big time of music business Rainn lives behind The Chapel in the alley behind the dumpster with her keyboard and little else to nurture her life as a composer of songs Her fellow band members are her life until she meets the haunting Jaselle who is the light in her dark life despite the fact that after a physically and emotionally satisfying one night stand Rainn is afraid to re connect she has a fear of meaningful relationships still reeling from the loss of her brother But gradually Jaselle re enters Rainn s life and all seems well until Jaselle s addiction to meth alters her mind and behavior and Rainn s path into Hades to rescue her beloved Eurydice becomes her challenge. Dissonance in a minor contemporary dance Nicole Disney understands street language even if I find it super interesting Well I was wide awake for this one The voice in this book was really great Very real and the emotions that run through the story are palpable I love that as the story progresses and the conflicts ensue I got sucked back into the story again and before I knew it hours had gone by This is a hidden gem that needs to be seen by those who love to think and feel 244 I couldn t put this book down That s right I read it straight through in a single two day shot meals and bathroom breaks of course. Contemporary dissonance in a minor key Why Because it is a truly gripping story phenomenally written gut and heart wrenching and one of those books that haunts you in those moments when you have to take a break because your eyes are falling out your mind and heart are twisted into an anxious fetal ball and you just need to stare at the inside of your eyelids to try to get your head around what s going on in this extremely powerful story. Dissonance in a minor book Truth in advertising I used to play in a band was a manager of bands a music producer a studio engineer and ran a music production house and radio promotion company I know the business of being in a band from inside and out Rainn the main character of this novel is the lead singer creative genius poet lyricist of a band which originally included her brother and is at the center of her quest to define her place in the world So this is definitely my kind of novel. Contemporary dissonance in a minor guitar But way beyond the grip that music can have on a person s life this book captures the intense romance and suicide pact of that ubiquitous bedfellow of the rock underworld drugs Take the ferocity of Requiem For A Dream and intensity of Spun combine them with the heartbreak of a lesser known film Christiane F ca 1981 and you might come close to sensing how the yin and yang attractive destructive power of drugs plays out in Dissonance Author Disney is able without glamorizing drug use to put us inside the head of people who go beyond recreational use and without resorting to melodrama lays out the price that is inevitably paid for such indiscretion. Dissonance in a minor ebook pdf There was one other aspect of Dissonance that made it a spectacular read for me I have a good friend in Portland Oregon who writes erotica I read one of her books about a lesbian relationship and was bored to tears I enjoy a good sexual read as much as anyone But that story was so completely loveless It was one explicit heavy breathing back arching encounter after the previous one Author Disney on the other hand kept me spellbound and for good reason The fact that Rainn is a lesbian was not the story The story was the intensity of love she felt for her new partner __ which was a natural extension of the love she felt for her music her brother her best friends Finally let me add this for the timid There is a disclaimer at the beginning of the book It warns of violence sexuality profanity lesbianism other allegedly tawdry elements which make this book unsuitable for teens and prudes Yet it is the gritty realities which author Disney captures with such authenticity which beg for even the easily shocked and offended to read this book This story captures the realities of our age The disenfranchisement of the young in shaping their world their disengagement from the distorted values of the elders that have turned America into one vast shopping mall and made money the only yardstick of value the necessity of each person to try against all odds to find themselves in a vulgar violent vacuous world crippled by television and the debasing and amoral deification of wealth and power it is these disturbing frightening and truly insulting assaults on the integrity of the human soul which are the very reasons why the timid and prudish should read this novel Dissonance is a wake up call that the 10th ring of Dante s Inferno which contemporary life is becoming will be the final resting place of all of us But we each ultimately have a choice Yes we will make mistakes along the way But we still can choose something better If the right choice is not available then we can create it 244 Review of Dissonance in A MinorNicole DisneyKindle edition June 26 2013By Jack RemickIn the 60s critics talked about the counter culture In the 80s they wrote about an emerging archetype the Outsider Nicole Disney in Dissonance in A Minor fuses the Outsider and mainstream with the counter culture The Dark Archetype takes front row center Disney s protagonist Rainn lives at night as a member of a band The Suicidal Angels She lives and drinks music but she descends into the well of loneliness and like another lost god has to find her way back She dwells in the meth high midnight of timeless beauty and falls in love so far she melds with the lover I can t get enough of the taste of her No matter how close she is it s never close enough Kindle 1571 The myth base in this novel is remarkable the artist who abandons the classical world on a quest for Rock God Gold Both dark and light Dissonance has all the characteristics of important writing working an ancient myth base relevant to our time the story takes us to new places in the mind Taking risks the novel is sexually charged daring to bring lesbian sex to the forefront without fear or glamour with both subject and style Disney creates a style all her own but she doesn t forsake the canonical sentence that gives language its power and takes us back 2500 years to the beginnings of rhetoric For example this passage is built on two techniques of Classical Rhetoric anaphora and alliteration. Dissonance in a minorlia Here s the whole passage But for now I m floating in a dream energized and fearless Yes fearless that adjective I ve been chasing it s here in the fold of the foil Nothing can hurt me I m fucking amazing I m too smart to be tricked too strong to be raped too resilient to be broken You know that feeling you get after you ve accomplished something really hard It feels a little like that only way better For once you re not so ashamed of yourself Read those words aloud and you ll hear two thousand years of literary tradition brought to play in a contempo outsider narrative set in the streets of 21st Century America and that s no mean feat. Dissonance in music history In keeping with those highly developed techniques Disney s style shows a fusion blend of cool Beat hip and high tone literary with touches of William S Burroughs raging in that peculiar hypnotic transcendence of the hungry mind Velvet copper silken smoke bring me a lover Sweet shadows fill my soul The room no longer extends beyond the glow of her lighter Though your sins be as scarlet they shall be as white as snow Bible verses ring randomly in my head with no origin My mother must be climbing out of my subconscious I know so much than she Gather the lonely bring them to me I have the answers I ll live forever As a student of life on the streets and paying rightful homage to the First Beats Villon and Rimbaud Disney evokes the work of the latter in subtle ways In Illuminations Rimbaud has written Il y a enfin quand l on a faim et soif quelqu un qui vous chasse There is finally when you re hungry and thirsty someone who chases you away Here is Rainn on the street It s freezing And when I say freezing I mean it in the Denver Colorado literal way Freezing It s starting to snow I look to my flip down storage unit It s just big enough to fit in if it gets too intense out here But I have to take all my stuff out to get inside which I really don t want to do Plus it s cramped I can t really lie flat in there and it s pitch black obviously Claustrophobia kicks in pretty fast It seems darker than usual tonight The word dark and its variations buying the drug you desperately want her off of selling your soul for a bag the size of a quarter because she s dying without it She ll fall asleep in your arms and the shallow breaths will just stop You pick change out of the gutter you rip off the kids selling lemonade who can t count change you wish you kept the tips from bartending instead of turning them in to Benny You let the creepy guy outside Walgreens touch your hair And you go back to her she s in the same spot because she s too weak to move Her thumb is shaking on the lighter I broke this passage into one liners to look at the rhythm First a string of short sentences followed by longer sentences then back to the short sentences We re just friends We ve never done anything Nothing matters Nothing sinks in And she s using again She s dying again She s crying again She s screaming again She s sick again. Book dissonance in a minor review She s shaking again You re on the curb again buying the drug you desperately want her off of selling your soul for a bag the size of a quarter because she s dying without it 30words She ll fall asleep in your arms and the shallow breaths will just stop 13 words You pick change out of the gutter you rip off the kids selling lemonade who can t count change you wish you kept the tips from bartending instead of turning them in to Benny 33 words You let the creepy guy outside Walgreens touch your hair 10 words And you go back to her she s in the same spot because she s too weak to move 17 words Her thumb is shaking on the lighter 7 words Read that passage aloud and you can feel the rhythm pulsating The effect comes from the repetition again again again and she s she s she s coupled with the short long short variation This is the work of a fine writer in control of the tools and techniques of the trade and it shows that if she s not a student of rhetoric she has paid her dues Of course this technical prowess just slips up on you the reader leaving no trace of the mastery because in a drug and rock n roll shock saga you re not supposed to have mastery you just let it happen. Dissonance in a minor book analysis Back to the question Does Rainn have a way out At its deepest this novel is a story of death and resurrection Rainn in love will sacrifice everything for the lover but happiness is not to be In a masterful tour de force Disney gives us one fine example of Objects behaving like Characters In the best novels and in the very best films objects take on a life They move through the story in and out like characters and they have a history and they have problems and they attach to other characters In Dissonance in A Minor the primary object which comes early in the opening is a piano They pull me farther and farther down the hallway until I m at a second door It s open just a little and through the crack of space I catch a glimpse of it a grand piano cherry wood finish curved legs intricate hand carvings. Dissonance in a minor pdf download As the story develops Disney tracks that piano through three beats to show its symbolic value 1 The piano is an index to the love between Rainn and Jaselle and as Jaselle descends deeper into her hell Rainn sells the piano in order to save her It s not just a piano It s the most beautiful piano ever made It is my soul mate It is my companion It is the only thing that knows my every secret It is my doorway to the past It is my window to the future It is the language of angels It is worth 9459 to a guy named Travis who owns a restoration shop Thinking about Travis restoring my piano makes me want to eat battery acid for breakfast 2 The piano returns at the end of the novel I turn the corner and freeze My muscles stop moving like I ve been sprayed with that liquid nitrogen that makes everything shatter Taking up basically the entire room is Jaselle s piano My piano It looks just the same as the day I had to sell it The finish is still faded from the years the strings are still dusty the ivory keys still have their little chips. Contemporary dissonance in a minor pdf 3 Fusion of the Piano as index to Jaselle and hope this answers the question but you ll have to read the novel to find out how I sit down on the piano bench and hold my hands over the keys afraid to touch them I remember her watching me play the way her stormy eyes went so deep into me I lost my breath I remember her coming up behind me interrupting my song to wrap her arms around me her breath in my hair I remember her telling me not to look so rigid while I played so she could paint a natural portrait I remember her lying beneath the piano just listening her painting to my music in the other room Maybe she still is listening What would she want to hear I take a deep breath and begin Chopin s Prelude Op 28 no. Dissonance in a minorjugation And we re full cycle at the end This is a very enjoyable very fast read chock full of youthful but wise and destroyed characters I look forward to Nicole Disney s second novel I can only imagine that it will be rich and deep as this one is 244 Dissonance in A Minor is the story of Rainn a tough street person trying to make it big with her band who struggle with the usual growing pains of any group of musicians when she meets Jasselle a seemingly together and almost dream like figure But as Rainn feels herself inexorably drawn under Jaselle s spell she becomes and aware of the woman s darker side While issues of addiction obsession and of a poisonous past coming back to haunt one have been dealt with before Dissonance took me deep into the experience under the superficial layers of hurt and betrayal to the darker motives of why one stays with someone clearly bent on self destruction Disney s book is so vivid and stark it s hard to believe she wasn t writing even in part from experience The writing alone is tight and yet fluid coming off loose like street slang but disciplined like great literature The story is engaging and alluring making the book hard to put down I recommend this book to anyone looking for than just a light beach read something that stays with you long after the last page has been turned This remains on my list of books of consequence 244
