Our Irish Presbyterian HeritageWhilst I am a Methodist minister I was baptised in a Presbyterian church and the revised edition of this book was given to me whilst I was at theological college by my uncle who was a Presbyterian minister perhaps as a last attempt to get me to jump ship I was taught church history by the late author in what was then joint teaching arrangements between the Presbyterian Union College and Methodist Edgehill under the banner of Queens University but even then the seeds of the subsequent separation and divisions with the university were evident with an increasingly anti ecumenical conservative mindset among my fellow presbyterian students students who are now leaders in the denomination It was to check some facts regarding the foundation of the college that I returned to this book nearly 30 years on subsequently deciding to reread the whole book It s not long but it s not an easy read curiously devoid of the tendency to anecdotal storytelling that the author was famous for in the classroom But it was interesting to see to a certain extent the mirroring of former conflicts and divisions in the 17th 18th and 19th centuries in the divisions that are currently affecting our sister denomination although the issues of debate are different As then internal debates are having effects outside of the Presbyterian church although maybe now it is much seen as another reason to stay well clear of Christianity Is this fractiousness to be the lasting heritage the title speaks of Our Irish Presbyterian Heritage
