that take place I feel this novel far exceeded the last It has two major things that its predecessor The Sultan of Monte Cristo lacked style and entertainment It was clear within the first chapter that the quality of writing in this novel had improved greatly The grammatically correct well structured sentences not only made the book easier to read and understand but it also made it much enjoyable Although there were still a few of Holy Ghost Writer s signature time leaps where months go by in space of one sentence the plot flowed nicely and kept me interested As far as entertainment goes this novel was a success There were the old favorites as well as new additions to the cast such as Black Beauty Huck Finn and of course Sherlock Holmes who serves as narrator as well when I saw such a famous name in the title I was a little leery of how the cunning detective would be portrayed but it didn t take me long to warm up to his presence I enjoyed Huck Finn s brief cameo as well I feel like the characters truly came together in this novel whereas the last one made it feel like they were strangers who just happened to be in the same book All in all this novel put a smile on my face As was expected the book may have ended but the story definitely did not I m sure even will be revealed in the next installation 9781490406848 When I first read The Sultan of Monte Cristo I was somewhat disappointed in the storytelling although I enjoyed the strength and independence given to the female characters Since reading That Girl Started Her Own Country I ve greatly changed my opinion about this series I ve become enraptured by the writer s own unique twist on the Count of Monte Cristo a brand of historical fiction mixed with mash ups of other classic novels mixed with an intriguing hint of conspiracy and international intrigue One of my favorite things about this volume which tells the further story of Edmond Dantes and his two wives Mercedes and Haydee is that it allows me time with some favorite characters I had to leave behind when The Count of Monte Cristo ended Maximilian Morrel and his now wife Valentine make an appearance and I m very grateful to have an update on these beloved characters whose story is somewhat left hanging at the end of Dumas classic Another character who makes an appearance is Sherlock Holmes Anachronistic Yes the story of Edmond Dantes takes place in the early 19th century while Sherlock Holmes is an Edwardian era detective about 100 years apart But just go with it it s fun and I look forward to continuing this series and
