The connection between two people in love can owe so much to chance a frustrating mix of the right timing of feelings developing at the same pace and reaching the same intensity waiting for the right move and hoping that other reads it as intended countermoves and the final burst of courage to confess and lay oneself open to the acceptance or rejection of the other It was such a great read I could read this over and over and still get the same intensity of feels Paul Dalmacio is the bomb Literature Fiction Romance Young Adult Reader reactions to retellings of beloved classics often fall under two camps. Well played literature fiction genres A The author gets the characters wrong forcing the reader hurl the book in the direction of the nearest wall and scream NO I don t care if this is a retelling Elizabeth Bennett Jane Eye Sherlock Holmes would never do that shit B The author gets everything right You get the sense that the characters are basically the same people you first loved but you get to see them in a different setting This might be the literary nerd in me talking but that s what makes retellings so darn enjoyable. Well played guild Patrice is a varsity player for her university s football team It was wonderful seeing how she was so focused on her schoolwork football and her friends Girl s got goals something I always enjoy reading about As a character I enjoyed seeing her realize her impressions of people weren t always right. Well played board games There are plenty of love stories where the hero is charming but still a total alphahole Paul is the exact opposite of that He has no social skills whatsoever and comes across a jerk despite being a great guy. Well played jelentese Since the book is told mostly from Patrice s point of view I enjoyed her reactions to his awkward attempts at flirting and cringed on his behalf The boy has no game At all But it only made his efforts seem even sincere. Book well done The author made the setting come alive for me as well I attended a university in my hometown so I never had to live in a boarding house or a dormitory As a result I enjoyed living the dormitory life vicariously through Patrice and her friends buying barbecue from a stall right outside enduring a roommate s band practice on the terrace and a bunch of other experiences depicted in the book. Well played jelentese If you want something sweet that ll reach inside your chest and tug at your heartstrings I highly recommend this Pride and Prejudice adaptation with a setting that ll make you want to be a college student again Crazy extracurricular activities and all Literature Fiction Romance Young Adult I absolutely adored this book PERFECT Pride Prejudice retelling Seriously Hello nerdy Darcy I had all the swoons Amazing and relatable main character I loved Patrice Great friendships Fun college adventures soccer Filipino cast beautiful setting and lots of yummy food JUST AMAZINGIf you re looking for a great romance then I recommend checking this book out Literature Fiction Romance Young Adult Full review at Book Thingo. Well played book Based on Pride Prejudice Fun but the romance is shaky which is not surprising given that I ve always found Darcy to be horribly douchey and barely redeemed by the end of PP Clever adaptation though as a new adult romance set in the Philippines Part of the universality heh of this reading experience is due to the strength of Patrice s narrative voice As with Austen Atienza imbues her heroine with qualities that the reader can t help but admire and barrack for The story includes a lot of minor characters but they re all anchored against Patrice s narrative and are surprisingly easy to keep track of Literature Fiction Romance Young Adult I m a fan of Jane Austen s Pride Prejudice although perhaps not as much of a big fan as other friends I m still very partial to Persuasion because hello Captain Wentworth and that letter but I like reading books and watching adaptations of Pride Prejudice because it s my first Austen and you don t forget your first When I heard of Katrina Ramos Atienza s retelling of PP set in the Los Banos I knew I had to read it Even if I m not a huge fan of football. Well played meaning in hindi Patrice Reyes is an incoming junior and she believes that it will be her best semester ever She s sure her team will win the regional football championships her grades look good she has good friends at the dorm and oh look there s a crush But when cold and arrogant math guy Paul becomes her partner in one of her major subjects her days are thrown off course How will she get rid of him to get her perfect semester back Does she even really want to get rid of him I had a lot of fun with Well Played mostly because it was so much fun matching the characters to the original Almost everyone had a match save for a few which would have complicated the plot a little I appreciate that the plot wasn t that complicated though because it made the story easier to read with just enough drama to make me hang on I liked Patrice and her wit her loyalty to her friends and her fierceness and her passion for her sport I wasn t always fond of her to be honest but she made for a great Filipino Lizzie Bennett I also really liked Gia the equivalent of Jane and and Deenie although I can t decide if Deenie is less or annoying than Lydia I really liked Migs Bingley too and he seems like such a nice guy Paul is such a true Darcy with the angst and the grumpiness and all the hidden layers that makes him a Darcy. Bokkers playlist My favorite part of the book is the setting most definitely I loved how the setting just worked for the story The setting was based on University of the Philippines in Los Banos Laguna I didn t study there and the last time I was there was in 2003 but even if I can barely remember anything there the setting in this book felt so real I liked the dorm setting and how the setting seemed to be a character in itself I liked it so much that it was so easy to imagine everything there and I don t even have to suspend any kind of disbelief.
