Light on action and description the real strength of this story lies in the characterization At the beginning we find young mercenary Paeter the Nederlander a prisoner of Otrim of Idessa himself a mercenary barbarian in the service of the Queen Through flashbacks we learn of Paeter s past and his reasons for taking the sword while in the present he must prove his loyalty to Otrim and the Idessan army In a nice twist Otrim a powerful warrior is fiercely religious while Paeter struggles with his view of faith A Promise of Glory is the first in a series of five novelettes Kindle Edition A Promise of Glory is the story of Paeter the Nederlander how he came to be in the service of Otrim The narrative is fast paced and alternates between flashbacks to Paeter s childhood and the life of an army on the march toward battle Paeter s life hangs by a thread for much of the story He is serving as a mercenary guarding a supply train for the Korreti the enemies of the Idessans when the Idessan soldiers attack Otrim spares him and recruits him to the Idessan cause but Paeter must prove his loyalty. A promise of glory mystery thrillers review The only thing missing in the story is a sense of place I don t have a clear idea through what type of countryside the army is passing There are mentions of trees so it s not a desert but is it scrub or lush forest What Perry lacks in place descriptions he makes up for in character development He does well creating a complex background story for Paeter who has chosen the life of a soldier and turned his back on the priesthood Paeter claims to be wielding a sword to earn money to send to his widowed mother and family Is he sacrificing for their benefit or running away Otrim s character is still a mystery He s strong and powerful a natural born leader There s a bit of Conan the Barbarian in Otrim but the wildness is tempered by religious faith and intense loyalty to Idessa Where Conan is a free agent Otrim is a dutiful soldier forever seeking the right path There s a chink somewhere in the armor of Otrim s character and I hope we see it in future stories in the series Kindle Edition I thoroughly enjoyed this story but will reserve a complete review until I ve finished the other two in the set A Lesson in War and A Trumpet for Battle. Book a promise of glory pdf For now I ll say this Excellent Kindle Edition If I were to subtitle this novelette I might consider The Battle of Sword and Faith Paeter the Nederlander runs from his parent s faith to trust in the glory of battle only to run into a man who not only has faith but for unknown reasons has faith in Paeter s worthiness But the men and general of his army don t share their commander s belief in Paeter The primary conflict arises in this tension as well as within Paeter himself. A promise of glory bible verse If I had any complaints there would be two While not desiring a lot of action to keep me glued to the story it did proceed a little too slow at spots especially at the beginning Once I got into the characters it wasn t much of an issue Also Mr Perry uses a touch of old style phrasing and words For the most part it was well done but there were a couple times it sounded confusing or unclear.
