Very cute detail in the illustrations of each of the monkeys 9781771380454 This cool math and observation picture book is definitely not a bedtime book We tried it at bedtime before I looked closely at it and my five year old s other parent kept muttering This is insane even though I eventually skipped everything that wasn t plot related On each two page spread there are I ll take the illustrator s word for it 100 monkeys all detailed differently It s important to remember that it s a two page spread because Along with the larger print general plot text once there were 100 hungry monkeys and smaller text dialog interjections from some of the monkeys there are little notes like Can you find the monkey eating a stick Where s the baby monkey How many monkeys are eating leaves which lead the reader or the audience to hunt for details in the pictures You can also count all the monkeys if you ve the patience The plot itself is simple the hungry monkeys find food then are chased by a monster and escape across a ravine it turns out the monster only wanted to play with them so the monkeys rescue the monster and have a party The numbers and the details are the stars here I expect lots of happy time looking over this book with my five year old I think that kids below five probably would find the pages too busy and confusing but it would be fine for co reading right up to about 2nd or 3rd grade.
