And that had so much choppy writing First off though the book is said to be YA I disagree with this In many ways I think this is new adult myself But I will hold it up to other YA while writing the review I do had a very hard time with the gay love story in this book because it felt so out of place Like the writer was not sure about the love story Which lead to me being unsure about it Now let me stated I gay love straight love to me it s love I enjoy reading gay YA books and when i find a good one I love it But in this book it felt like it was done as a trick A cop out That bothered me THis is not some trend in YA books And just because you have a gay love story in it does mean that it will sell And I think that the lack of going over many of the problems that they would have faced at that time in history being gay and such topics as abuse and etc I feel that if you are trying to have that as a key part in your story you have to write about I would much rather have a write stated their thoughts on these matters than not say anything at all Because why are we reading about if not to learn something Even if we don t agree with it So than add to this the fact that the book was slow moving and had choppy writing For my full review go to Fiction.

Book sideshow of merit pdf I think Sideshow of Merit would have been such an awesome opportunity to delve into the topics that were approached the abuse homosexuality but for me it ultimately failed on that account Fiction Historical Fiction The two main characters pretty Tevan George and James Rowley have been on the run for nine years after skipping out on the sanatorium Mount Rosa in Canada in 1961 for TB testing Tuberculosis survivors Tevan and James are emotional wrecks What happened in Mount Rosa What s happening now This story was confusing to me often the author tries to use the technique of going back to the past to show what happened but not in a coherent way It wasn t spaced out like chapter breaks to really see the time it happened Pietsch to me was not exactly successful in my opinion I think pietsch held herself back from really exploring sexual abuse and homosexuality She censored herself while describing both subjects which made me uncomfortable than if it was stated upfront Two boys in the ward were called Betty and Veronica and it took me a long time to realize they were boys and brothers The nicknames were just thrown in. You couldn t call Mount Rosa Hospital a good place to be in 1957 when you were fourteen But it s where Tevan George was and James Rowley too convalescing from tuberculosis And it s where both boys were abused by an older boy although neither of them did much talking about it then or later Shut up That s what Tevan did James too but he never said much about anything anyway Nine rocky years later on the run together since they skipped out on a medical checkup at Mount Rosa s in 1961 Tevan and James emerge early one morning from the 55 Chevy they ve been living in and come across Buddy Merit setting up his Ten in One sideshow on a fairground in Ontario They can t do magic They can t foretell the future They can t swallow swords What Tevan and James decide they can do is a stunt they ve done only in private in the dark a stunt that performed in public for the marks takes on a life of its own and surprises even the two young men who perform it In the company of the misfits and reprobates and losers who make up Buddy Merit s sideshow Tevan and James act out the central trauma of their lives until they get to a place from which they can t go forward and they can t go back SIDESHOW OF MERIT is a story of abuse and recovery of friendship and trust of survival of repeated failure and ultimate success set against a backdrop of human frailty selfishness greed and vulnerability Tevan and James s journey of is a coming of age story like no other Sideshow of MeritI wasn t a fan of this book I tried very very hard to get into it but I found the narration hard to follow I kept waiting for it to pick up and for me to attach myself to one of the characters but it just didn t happen I read a third of it That was all I also do not think this is a book for YAs At all Maybe for college aged YAs Fiction Historical Fiction I never do thisI hate doing thisbut I didn t finish this book I just couldn t A book has never beaten me before until now I didn t like the characters I found the narration extremely difficult to follow in places and what could have been an interesting story just wasn t It seemed like a thinly veiled attempt to write a new Of Mice and Men with a intelligent savvy character controlling a less intelligent companion I got no pleasure from reading this book at all Maybe I ll come back to it at a later date maybe not Fiction Historical Fiction Nope Absolutely not Because I have a proclivity to finishing things even if they are unpleasant I stuck this out to the end and wished that I had saved my time Veiled and not so veiled same sex abusive eroticism with just enough ambiguity in the blurb to get you to check it out Some touchy subjects can be written about and be classified as literaturethis one mistakenly so Fiction Historical Fiction .
