And that had so much choppy writing First off though the book is said to be YA I disagree with this In many ways I think this is new adult myself But I will hold it up to other YA while writing the review I do had a very hard time with the gay love story in this book because it felt so out of place Like the writer was not sure about the love story Which lead to me being unsure about it Now let me stated I gay love straight love to me it s love I enjoy reading gay YA books and when i find a good one I love it But in this book it felt like it was done as a trick A cop out That bothered me THis is not some trend in YA books And just because you have a gay love story in it does mean that it will sell And I think that the lack of going over many of the problems that they would have faced at that time in history being gay and such topics as abuse and etc I feel that if you are trying to have that as a key part in your story you have to write about I would much rather have a write stated their thoughts on these matters than not say anything at all Because why are we reading about if not to learn something Even if we don t agree with it So than add to this the fact that the book was slow moving and had choppy writing For my full review go to Fiction.

Historical fiction sideshow of merit summary Nicole s written work has appeared in York University s Journal of the Association for Research on Mothering and the University of Toronto s Women s Health and Urban Life Nicole s review of how the media and legal system interpreted race and gender within the Reena Virk case is called Born Freaks Made Freaks and Media Circuses Systemic Management of Race and Gender in the Virk Case Her fictional work Sideshow of Merit is published by namelos press. Fiction sideshow of merit Tevan and James continue to try to survive to find a community Nicole says of Sideshow of Merit s challenging and sometimes offensive protagonists They aim to draw conclusions about who is responsible for the exploitation they endured with Bern and again at the sideshow and in the end find that they do not bear this responsibility personally Sideshow invites the reader to consider and reconsider what constitutes resolution to trauma and violation To Tevan resolution is not about Bern being arrested being forgiven or issuing him some kind of payback The bottom line for Tevan is understanding that what happened was not his fault And understanding that you can love the person who hurt you and the abuse still remains absolutely wrong To me that s success site_link You know that thing where an author interrupts the past tense narrative to say something like little did I know how important that choice was or something similar It s supposed to pique the reader s interest to make you want to know why that choice which maybe otherwise might have just been logged as a thing that happened was a Thing That Happened It s a useful trope. Sideshow of merit epub free I m willing to overlook the random formatting problems I got my copy of Sideshow of Merit from Netgalley after all so I m sure the final release will actually use paragraph breaks and a certain amount of stylistic inconsistency but after the tenth time the narrator broke tense I just started to get annoyed I get it Things happened Choices were made Some of them will impact things about which I have not yet been told That s sort of the point of a story. Sideshow of meritrust wichita Don t get me wrong the book wasn t bad The pacing was okay and the plot was interesting enough to keep me reading I didn t really like the main character but that s not necessarily a bad thing Mostly I just felt like I d have liked to be immersed in the story without the omnipresent author pulling me out of it In a way I guess that s a compliment to the book Fiction Historical Fiction I was really looking forward to reading this book The Story sounded really interesting But sadly this was not something that I can say I really liked or enjoyed reading For me the book had it s good points when you looked hard enough It was not terrible and I m sure that author did put a lot of time into it The best way to start off the review was is by saying that had i not been reviewing this I would have stopped reading it all together However that being said I could not read a book that I did not like the main characters Historical Fiction After reading about 2 3 of this I finally have to give up Mainly what bothers me is the author s writing style Pietsch treats her themes sexual abuse autoeroticism addiction with a strangely cagey avoidance presumably to add an aura of mystery or maybe a feeling of gravitas But in trying to cloak everything in mystery she ends up with far too many vague and unsatisfying scenes that seem to lead nowhere After a while I just didn t care any. Sideshow of meritmind ab And as others readers have mentioned this should definitely not be categorized as YA Fiction Historical Fiction First things first this definitely does not classify as Teens YA There s much too much delicate topics for it to be considered YA. Epub sideshow of merit pdf It is 1957 Tevan and George are recovering from tuberculosis in Mount Rosa Hospital Both are victims of abuse from another male though it is often a taboo topic between the two companions The duo escape from the hospital nearly four years later and eventually find their way to the Ten In One sideshow in Ontario which is run by a mysterious man named Buddy Merit The pair use the fairgrounds as a means of expressing the abuse and trauma that they suffered through during their years at Mount Rosa and somehow fix their broken selves in the process. Pdf sideshow of merit pdf The story is very slow and I felt that the author s approach to such sensitive topics sexual abuse addiction seemed as though she were gliding over the topics not really showing the significance that these factors were on their lives and the resulting trauma and damage that resulted because of it I felt that nothing was really happening for a big chunk of the book and despite their stories I didn t develop any forms of attachment to Pietsch s characters. Book sideshow of merit pdf I think Sideshow of Merit would have been such an awesome opportunity to delve into the topics that were approached the abuse homosexuality but for me it ultimately failed on that account Fiction Historical Fiction The two main characters pretty Tevan George and James Rowley have been on the run for nine years after skipping out on the sanatorium Mount Rosa in Canada in 1961 for TB testing Tuberculosis survivors Tevan and James are emotional wrecks What happened in Mount Rosa What s happening now This story was confusing to me often the author tries to use the technique of going back to the past to show what happened but not in a coherent way It wasn t spaced out like chapter breaks to really see the time it happened Pietsch to me was not exactly successful in my opinion I think pietsch held herself back from really exploring sexual abuse and homosexuality She censored herself while describing both subjects which made me uncomfortable than if it was stated upfront Two boys in the ward were called Betty and Veronica and it took me a long time to realize they were boys and brothers The nicknames were just thrown in.
