Book Handbook of nothin' says But unfortunately there are issues with Nothin that made him a difficult character for me to relate to I feel that the way Nothin reacts is frequently appropriate for a 5 year old than a 13 year old His obliviousness to very straight forward things such as his mother freaking out about porn without saying her calling it porn makes him appear slow at worst and air headed at best That could be charming but I personally found it tedious and unrealistic I also felt the author tried too hard to make me sympathize with Nothin I can only handle reading about so many tumbles falls trips and bouts of bad luck before it starts to read like a wacky sitcom The plot is quite thin Nothin has a bullying problem in the abstract sense but it s not that big of a deal aside from a scattered few moments There s no pressing goal no time limit no central struggle to triumph over Most of the book is focused on Nothin s whimsical tangents while the bullies themselves are completely one dimensional I would have found it interesting if Nothin found a way to make the bullies his friends through his ample creativity and spirit rather than what actually happened Overall I feel the whole thing could be trimmed to half its size and it would have made for a much exciting read.
