Not too many stories in this particular universe have a strong female character She was my favorite character and definitely opened up the whole of the man kzin universe to tales with female kzin in the lead The plot and character building in the book was pretty amazing I felt connected to the characters and they didn t feel one dimensional at all There were a couple of lesser characters like the Doctor and the Judge that I didn t really connect with but since they were very minor characters it didn t affect the story at all I really enjoyed the angle with the kzin pirates and they way they talked and acted very similar to the pirates of old earth.

Treasure planet book narrator Besides the ridiculousness of giant warring space tigers that behave like drunk piratical Klingons speaking like Captain Barobossa we have Peter the human who is dumber than a bag of hammers and bounces around with no real assertive intelligence And how is this guy supposed to carry the novels load With a frickin amulet a dying space tiger pirate gave him His best friend Marthar a Kzin princess has this super secret royal family lineage that enables them to go anywhere in the galaxy without little monetary effort But she chooses to live in a backwater town on a backwater planet in a backwater galaxy Fug The bad space pirate Silver speaks in this olde pirate English then all of a sudden it is switched off during a lengthy narrative Huh When space tigers say things like Skel showed a bit o sense. Treasure planet captain The authors kill off 3 of the most interesting characters in the novel at about the 15% mark then we get dull space travel and tiger pirates masquerading as the crew of the Black Pearl I would say Larry Niven would be turning over in his grave but he isn t dead yet 336 Just no Weak 336 Great adaptation of Treasure Island which I read a long time ago it has the feel of the story and the characters It seems to be a faithful version though the treasure is interesting I d love to find out about that Having the Kzinti use pirate jargon takes a bit of getting used to but Silver is certainly a bloodthirsty pirate My favorite character was Marthar but I liked the Doctor and the Judge and Bengar And I can see why Marthar treated Peter like a pet sometimesThere was a lot of background at the beginning but it covered a lot of territory It s different from most Man Kzin stories but it s well done and it would be interesting reading it with the original and comparing them Hey make it a school assignment andthat reminds me of the Jack London story To Build a Fire and the companion SF update To Ignite a Fire on Enceladus by Vincent Miskell which is available as a combo 336 Absolutely terrible tried repeatedly to get into this book but could never make it past page 20 Being a direct rip on Treasure Island which is public domain so fair enough it doesn t remotely fit into the Known Space universe. Treasure planet kids book The idea of a Kzin speaking like an 18th century Earth pirate is ridiculous so I thought this might be a good place to jump into it even though it is not considered canon by the creator of the series The character development was decent the story moves at a decent pace It has been well night thirty years since I last read Treasure Island but some parts do somewhat stand out in it and it seemed like the authors did a credible job translating those moments into this book I liked the authors take on what constitutes treasure i. Treasure planet book disney e instead of piles of precious metals and jewels lying around the treasure is an ancient dead race s knowledge saved in the form of metal bars in storehouse s towers scattered across the planet It has some good moments it also has some long boring moments I did feel like the story might have been a bit longer than it needed to be but I still enjoyed it overall It does have some crazy moments in it like when Marthar fakes out a pirate by seducing him before brutally killing him after he lets his guard down Or when Bengar and Peter enter the control room only to find K zarr standing in the ship s control room That surprised me to no end initially but in retrospect should have been somewhat obvious Or there was a moment where Marthar saves Peter s life that was pretty crazy too I guess these moments stand out most in my mind but there were other lesser moments as well. Treasure planet download I did like the interaction between Peter and Marthar throughout the book I thought the authors did a credible job describing how difficult it could be having an alien female feline as your best friend Maybe it would be better to say how different the thinking and mindsets were between Marthar and Peter Still though they did have a close friendship that I suspect will used as an example to help both species to continue to live together in peace It seemed as if the War between humans and Kzin must not have been over for too many generations based on some of the comments and attitudes of some of the characters in the book I am not saying it was a bad thing or poorly done there were enough hints made maybe too many hints at times to remind the reader that things could change between Man and Kzin pretty quick especially amongst the crew on the Valiant It was funny though how some of the planets and cities ports mentioned in the story used the names of islands in the Caribbean Sea normally associated with pirates I mean it makes sense because of the baseline story that is adapted into this narrative but it still seemed funny to me. Treasure island pdf archive I also found it funny that Silver was able to hack into the Valiant a second time at the novel s end in order to facilitate his escape I guess he was a lot smarter than anybody gave him credit for being Hahahah The beginning and the ending were VERY reminiscent of what I remember about Stevenson s book especially the ending where Silver gives them the slip and escapes It would have been interesting to learn if his claim to being a distant relative of Marthar and her royal family turned out to be true Not that it would have made any difference in the book or the story but it still would have been interesting to learn. Treasure planet kids book There did seem to be some missteps in the book though Like the Supreme Kzin on Wunderland not properly vetting the Kzin who organized the crew of the Valiant nor letting the Captain of the Valiant being involved in the vetting process for incoming crew members That seemed like something pretty basic that should have happened especially in light of where they were going a lost planet in the middle of pirate territory in space The Captain takes the expedition s leaders to task over this oversight early on in the book too but nothing is really done about it Also with it being a modified human ship I was surprised at how few human crew members there were aboard the vessel There were two maybe three humans that were the among the expedition s leadership core Peter and a human couple who were pilots of sorts No other humans the rest of the crew was Kzin That did not make any sense to me to be honest. Treasure. planet I am sure there were some other oddities that I noticed but these were the two biggest discrepancies in my mind I am sure it partly has to do with the narrative the authors had in mind when writing this adaptation but it still seemed amiss to not have any humans onboard. Treasure planet ending I did enjoy the book I could see myself looking for the rest of the canonical books and reading them now after having read this book I know other reviewers have commented on how different this book is in comparison to the rest of the series but that is fine with me I hope I enjoy the other books as well 336 As others have said regardless of any potential quality of writing this story was an absolutely horrible idea Essentially ignore every thing you have learned about the Kzin race and make them large furry human pirates instead Why in the world would an alien felinoid species with no history of ship culture and only Wunderland natives who are Germananic in culture with no piratical elements to learn English from speak English in a pirate accent Every element of this story drags me out of the Known Space universe 100 stories novels with its well established science races and cultures I cannot even finish it It might be a fine tale as Treasure Island was but it has no part of Known Space This one goes on the library donation pile I m sure someone else will love it but I cannot 336 I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley I have read all the other Man Kzin War books and I am a huge fan of the series This latest standalone novel in the series was one of my favorites of the series so far The story was incredible with pirate kzin and a treasure hunt on an alien planet The story is told from the point of view of a boy from Wunderland which I thought might ruin things since kids aren t really the best point of view to read from However in this story the boy is very smart and not at all annoying His friend Marthar is an intelligent female kzin that is of the Riit bloodline that we have seen in the other Wunderkzin stories I really enjoyed having Marthar as a major character just in space I had a little trouble figuring out some of the pirate talk and the way that things were spelled but once I figured it out it was amusing to figure out what the pirates were saying I also felt that Silver was not really bad enough for a kzin pirate He did a lot of lying and backstabbing which is odd for a kzin but it worked out in the story I also would have liked to know about Silver and his connection to the Riit family that was mentioned in the book but hopefully that means there will be another book Overall I really enjoyed the story and characters and will definitely be buying this book for my Man Kzin War collection I highly recommend this book for anyone that enjoys adventure in space and pirates 336 Treasure Planet by Hal Colebatch and Jessica Q Foxpastiche noun an artistic work in a style that imitates that of another work artist or period. Treasure planet ending If you are a lover of the Kzin stories as I am then whether you have been following them for thirty years since they first appeared or have joined up recently with the release of Man Kzin XV released in February of this year you have likely thrilled along with me to find echoes of some of the famous movies of the past among the literature Treasure of the Sierra Madre Casablanca and most recently The Third Man have all appeared and there are likely others that I have missed Missing things is inevitable even for a voracious reader like myself largely because I am NOT as much of a film buff as I am a reader In fact when I recently read The Third Kzin I had to find and watch The Third Man simultaneously as I read the book swapping from text to video section by section I found both experiences to be enhanced.
