Leonora Starr was a pseudonym used by site_link Dorothy Rivers who in addition to being an author was the wife of the Mayor of Southwold Her real name was Lenora Mackesy Leonora Starr was a pseudonym used by site_link Dorothy Rivers who in addition to being an author was the wife of the Mayor of Southwold Her real name was Lenora Mackesy site_link I enjoyed this one fairly well but once again have left it too long so my plot summary will be full of question marks and maybe even totally wrong memories of some other book please be warned Our heroine is Jemima a Scottish minister s daughter with a gorgeous extremely selfish older sister Lisbeth who gets everything she wants Lisbeth got married and lives in London now and has invited the exhausted Jemima who has been taking care of her father since her mom died 5 years ago to visit so Jemima excitedly goes to town prepared to have a wonderful time and maybe even see her childhood friend Gavin whom she s had a crush on forever Alas Lisbeth is still extremely selfish and actually invited Jemima to town NOT for a vacation but because Lisbeth s husband John is being sent overseas on work and they can t take their son Jamie with them so would Jemima please be a dear and help out Specifically Lisbeth wants Jemima to take Jamie and go live with his grandmother in a small town in Suffolk and after some discussion Jemima agrees although she s pretty annoyed about it And well might Jemima be annoyed because it turns out that Jamie s grandmother is just awful she has her other son s widow Anne living with her and uses her as a servant while being mean to Anne s daughter Jo and Anne can t go get a job to save up to live somewhere else because she s too busy waiting hand foot on the grandmother s whims Jemima and Anne hit it off well and Jemima takes over a lot of the hand and foot so Anne can go get a job and Gavin shows up to take Jemima out occasionally while meanwhile Anne has a lovely slow romance with the headmaster of the local school who she is secretarying for and it is not even a little creepy since they ve been friends for a while so she is working for him in a peer way and well I don t remember exactly how it all plays out but it was very satisfying HEA for both Jemima and Anne and thus for Anne s daughter Jo and her dog Toby and Jamie is an adorable and reasonably realistic child who will be living with his parents again soon Gavin and Jemima plan to have scads of children which given how much time in the book she spent lovingly caring for Jamie and relating to Jo seems very indicated and I wish I could read the book about their family life I went and found my copy of the book so no question marks or wrong information Romance
Perhaps because Jemima had grown up in the shadow of her elder sister s obvious beauty she had never become conscious of her own subtle appeal But when she left her father s manse in Scotland and went to a little town in Suffolk other people were not slow to appreciate it Only Gavin seemed not to come completely beneath its spell though he was undeniably attracted There were brief flashes and these were golden moments to Jemima when it seemed that nothing but love could account for the bond between them but at other times a barrier of restraint divided them that neither seemed able to break down Then events took a hand turning the thoughts of both Jemima and Gavin away from themselves into channels which suddenly became of greater moment even than their own future happiness Jemima Author Leonora Starr.
