Starship pilot Alan Abrams crippled his younger brother Jimmy in a childhood scuffle and spent his entire life trying to make up for it But when humanity turns away from the stars his career evaporates and he can no longer afford his brother s care Then Alan gets a mysterious offer to join an interstellar expedition searching for a long lost starship The paycheck will support his brother forever The downside An untrustworthy fractious team An evasive domineering backer And a murder attempt before Alan eventakes the offer Alan finds himself piloting a ship attacked by a hostile universe outside and inside filled with sabotage deceit and murder For centuries humanity sought intelligent life among the stars Alan s expedition finds it Unfortunately Unbound BrothersUnbound BrothersRob Rowntree lives in the heart of Robin Hood country with his wife and two sons he loves writing and reading genre fiction and has had several well received short stories published he has just published his first novel Unbound Brothers. Unbound brothersro A guilt ridden deep space pilot offered one last job Solid science I had to look up some terminology and exciting sometimes horrific fiction English I read Silver by Rob Rowntree and I thought it was great Rowntree s voice comes thru like a real pro and you feel like you re reading someone who really knows his craft So I went back for and got Unbound Brothers I was expecting to hear that same smooth voice and I did but not all the time The really odd thing about reading this book was that much of the time you know that you re reading the work of a brilliant writer someone who carves out a story and gives it incredible depth Certainly not the work of an amateur And yet at the same time there are amateurish elements blended in with the much finer parts. Unbound brotherston medical As it turns out this is Rowntree s debut novel That explains the odd mistakes that really stand out like little pieces of cork in an exquisite wine Overall Rowntree weaves a beautiful SF tale The writing is good throughout but it s as if an anti punctuation terrorist detonated a bomb that blew the crap out of the commas disintegrating many of them and causing others to land in the wrong places Some of them managed to hold their ground The story is so good that you can commit to reading the whole thing despite the punctuation annoyance It s just sad though that such a great story that carries you into an outer space epic also has you stop every now and then to restart a sentence so you can read it how you would ve the first time if a missa comma had been there to guide you. Unbound brotherston medical The other weird thing and I don t know if this is deliberate or an oversight but there are certain issues that build tension or are hugely significant events for the characters and when it s time for the big revelation it s as if the author forgot that scene and just continued along with the story as if the new situation or astounding discovery is just another thing that you know already. Unbound brothersoft all That probably isn t real clear So imagine you re reading a story about a kid who s saving up to buy his first car and it s his dream He can t wait The day is coming It s getting closer and closer He has enough money Now he just needs to find a seller He searches day after day And then I drove my car to the movies with Jenny We had a great time This saturday I plan to wash it and wax it I want to take good care of it. Unbound brothersoft printer It s like the grand moment is skipped and then the story carries on I didn t get that But I won t spoil where and how it happens in the story There was also at least one plot element that I didn t buy but I understood why it was needed so I tried to not let it bother me. Unbound brotherson Aside from the negative which I tend to dwell on a bit the positive side is amazing I really felt like I was reading the work of an undeveloped master getting his fingertips wet on the keyboard for the first time It was like a painting by Leonardo Da Vinci as a young teen Genius level talent but with rough edges that need some polishing But you know it s the work of a master who hasn t fully settled into his own genius yet. Unbound brothersoft pc I can imagine that Rowntree doesn t want to revisit this story to perfect it after the extraordinary amount of time he must ve put into it but he should Either that or he needs to get it into the skillful hands of a good editor who will make the story shine the way it should. Unbound brotherston homecare The author is handing us a hefty chunk of gold but there are bits and pieces of the ore here still attached here and there A bit of smelting needs to be done for it to be smooth all the way around. Unbound brotherston homecare I highly recommend this book to people who love a good SF tale that starts on a future earth and then carries you out into some very serious space travel planetary exploration and . Unbound brothersoft software Rowntree s imagination and technical depth are terrific I can t wait to see the next book especially after having read Silver which was written four years after Unbound Brothers and showed the skill and maturity that is evident but developing in Unbound Brothers English Intriguing story with some original Science and Tech angles. Unbound brotherston homecare I found this book on Goodreads while reading forums and doing some feedback and thought I d give it a shot I m glad I did I ve spent a week trying to write a review that adequately defines this wonderful new book I just read I am failing miserably I won t describe the storyline or anything here because others can do that better and one should stick with one s strengths I guess the best I can do is say that I thoroughly enjoyed this story and am looking forward to reading from this author I ll try to give it a detailed review for those who care but isn t that simple sentence enough to start with Opening Intriguing opening that drew me in quickly and made me want to find out about the protag and each other character when they showed up Story 5 stars The story was original and intriguing with several nice twists that I almost didn t see coming and a few I actually didn t and that s saying something The author clearly has an established knowledge base derived from reading the other writers of the genre but instead of the same old retold story he has created a new to me at least angle on the exploration which I can t detail here without outright spoilers but which are well worth exploring on your own. Unbound brotherstrucks 5 stars Very well written for the most part in an inviting style that could make most mistakes be ignored by the casual reader There were few errors and a couple of very minor plot inconsistencies that bothered me slightly but me being me I mailed the author on GR with a list and am sure they will be corrected asap The author is British so us stupid Americans will have to get used to seeing an s where there should be a z numerous extra u s and e s and a spattering of unique British turns of phrase that will make you smile or sometimes shake your head but once you break through the language barrier you ll find yourself already enjoying this great story Character Development 4 This is where some of the inconsistencies came in While the character development of the protag is fairly deep the other characters were basically bit players who existed only to give the protag something to rail against or find temporary refuge with and at points some of the characters spoke or acted a bit out of character perhaps to make a plot point happen or just because the author let things get away for a bit but these were very minor easily fixable and probably few people would ever notice them but me I ve picked apart works from some very well known authors believe me though I ve only recently begun to write actual reviews and again I sent a list detailing each one so they ll likely have been addressed already when you read this drivel I ve left Ending 4. Unbound brotherstv679 5 Because endings seem to matter to so many readers these days I was not disappointed by the ending but it was not what I had expected either It is clearly left open for a sequel because there was an entire aspect of the storyline that played a part in the middle of the book but which was left unaddressed and will simply have to be taken care of later This will bother those readers who want everything sewn up in a nice little package and hand delivered but I like a little anticipation Also exploration of this other aspect will likely take a very long time for mankind to achieve so it will need another book at the very least I realize my ratings average out to a 4. Unbound brothersproduce 5 but there are no half stars and I really liked this story and think it deserved the 5 stars and since this is my review I get to give it that English Great read This is fantastic space opera with a cyber enhanced viewpoint fantastic characters interesting dilemma and intriguing antagonists English Picked up because of a Sword and Laser post I gave this book a chance and was intrigued by many of the concepts of technology and how space travel was explained Parts of this story reminded me of a Lovecraft like suspense and horror that was about what you didn t see rather than what you and the characters did see All in all I enjoyed the story and was left wanting from things that went unresolved English Space exploration Alien encounters To go where no man has gone before intrigues even the most grounded of us Unbound Brothers delves head first into us finally meeting them. Unbound brothersoft printer I am not a fan of hardcore sci fi For me it is hard to understand or visualize Because of this I found Unbound Brothers had a lot of sci fi terms that were foreign to me However Mr Rowntree has an amazing grasp of descriptive writing filling the pages with pictures through his words Through his writing the reader can experience space and all of its wonders and dangers. Unbound brotherstrucks This story is about survival trust and greed Although it takes place in space the characters are grounded and sensitive to who and what has been left behind at home on planet Earth Alan Abrams driven by love and guilt accepts one last mission as co pilot into space to help his incapacitated brother But things couldn t go wrong Through his strength and determination to get back home however Alan emerges as a leader that gets the crew through life threatening encounters. Unbound brothersoft pc Initially the story moved slow for me but the last fourth of the book does get exciting The writing flows and there s action on every page The book sometimes has continuity and logic problems and the story did leave some issues and questions unresolved that I feel would have been best answered in this book but it was a good read and I would recommend it to any lover of sci fi English
