Ebook the handle and the hold summary Mamet s recent books include The Old Religion 1997 a novel about the lynching of Leo Frank Five Cities of Refuge Weekly Reflections on Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers and Deuteronomy 2004 a Torah commentary with Rabbi Lawrence Kushner The Wicked Son 2006 a study of Jewish self hatred and antisemitism and Bambi vs Godzilla an acerbic commentary on the movie business site_link Sharp dialog but really just pointless After reading it I really felt like this was just something Mamet wrote to see where it went I never really understood how the entire plot went together how the beginning connected with the end I also found the two main characters difficult to separate My best guess is after he wrote it and had no idea what to do with it an agent said Kindle Single The Handle and the Hold This kindle single was everywhere but Mamet proves to be the expert in writing conversations It runs very realistically fully woven with inside jokes and terminologies but that harms his short story leaving it dry and lack of character depth Just witty and beautiful language is in this story nothing The Handle and the Hold Hard to believe this guy was once one of my favorites Although the curve ball in the middle of the story is kind of interesting the main characters aren t what you think they are this just really isn t very well written The dialogue is impenetrable not Glengarry Glen Ross witty banter impenetrable just arcane jargon without any point impenetrable and the style is to say the least annoying All the Dialogue is chopped Up like this. Book to have and to hold Feh The Handle and the Hold Mamet is overdoing the artlessness It worked well for him in the movies but here the text is so bland and insipid that the eye skims over without taking anything in It reads like one of those film description tracks for the blind except without any voice modulations Another comparison would be to distilled water no taste no absorption doesn t sustain life And the dialogue instead of being whip smart seems quirky at best and inadequate at actually telling the story The Handle and the Hold Um ok Anyone have a clue about why Mamet wrote this Or why after he wrote it he thought it was something someone would want to read It was really short and that is a good thing And I get it it reeks of that David Mamet oh so real dialogue Super Tell me a story next time Dave The Handle and the Hold The thing that really makes David Mamet s screenplays distinctive is the dialogue He is known for the fragmented but snappy verbal interchange of this protagonists This short story uses this same trick of dialogue and it is just as effective in depicting a realistic and spontaneous feel as it does in his plays and movie But unfortunately the author forgot about having a plot This short story offered as a Kindle Single on is about two criminal types stealing a plane and doing a job That about as far as it goes I guess this is a character driven work and the dialog is supposed to give us some insight into the two main protagonists However they are so uninteresting that I kept wondering what Mamet s point was If you love Mamet it s probably worth reading But if you want to really understand this writer read one of his screenplays or go see one of his movies AS for his films I would recommend Glengarry Glen Ross House of Games or The Spanish Prisoner The Handle and the Hold I read 56% of this book and put it down The dialog was realistic and vivid though incredibly too vulgar for my tastes The character development shined however The author could evoke personality and character with just one brief introduction He displayed very adept attention to mannerisms and detail I just didn t like the main characters or care about what they were doing I realize the story bounced from flashback to present making the characters sympathetic the fleshed out they became but I stopped caring about the story early on and found reading it a chore Judging from the four five star reviews this story has received I d say this story simply wasn t my cup of tea The Handle and the Hold Admittedly I struggled with the dialogue and had to read sentences multiple times to figure out the cadence and therefore the meaning I ve heard some describe this as a character study but I don t feel like I came away with any great insights If it were longer I could see it building up a interesting and compelling story Just as it was getting exciting it ended While I kept reading it wasn t necessarily because I was engaged but because I was hoping it would get to a compelling part of the story It always felt like that might just be around the corner This is not to say that I disliked the piece I m a fan of Mamet but this just didn t draw me in quite as much A positive it did keep me asking questions There were lots of things I would have liked to know about the characters the history around it and lots of directions the piece could have taken The Handle and the Hold Nicky and Sam steal a plane a B17 WWII bomber no less The backstory on these two characters is both colorful and shady Sam flew B25s in the war Nicky has a pistol that he took from a German officer that he shot There is also the issue of a man found dead in the desert with a bullet in his head Nicky is a suspect although nothing is ever proven. The handle and the holdzer The plane they are told to steal carries arms for Palestine not the farm implements listed in their official papers Their flight is interrupted at a refueling point in the Azores Sam flies on but Nicky is shot dead. The handle and the hold book series This is a fast moving story that grabs the reader and holds on The characters could use development It seems they need a bigger stage a longer bit of work than the novella. The handle and the hold ebook read online This short work read like a screenplay The questions I had about characters and events would be answered by watching the action on screen but were sometimes difficult to unravel in this novella The story might have worked better as a full length novel to allow complete display of the characters The Handle and the Hold I enjoy Mamet and I think Kindle Singles are great and all but to be honest I don t think I really got this at all It s a perfectly serviceable story but for a short piece feels like it takes forever to get to the point and there didn t appear to be much in the way of high stakes even though the story calls for it, The handle and the holdword Dialogue dialect is snappy and crisp but in places a bit overblown and hard to follow for this reader at least.
