The tumbler of godview K Chesterton that convincingly shows why he is precisely the kind of new mystic we need Chesterton s mysticism was grounded in an experiential knowledge that existence is a gift from God and that the only response is a spirituality of gratitude and praise for the unveiled beauty of creation What was his secret It was to love the splendor of the real and to live in adulthood the innocence and wonder of the child who sees everything for the first time The Gospel tells us we must become again like little children in order to enter the kingdom Chesterton shows us how One of the best books I have ever read on Chesterton Dale AhlquistA book that speaks openly of what is in the end the most important thing about him his friendship with God Stratford CaldecottA ground breaking examination of G. Ebook the tumbler of god summary K Chesterton Mark SebancRobert Wild s fascinating perspective is a welcome addition to the enlivening field of Chestertonian studies Chris ChanAn exploration made with deep and affectionate familiarity with GKC s writings of what is meant by the word mystic Francis Phillips The Catholic Herald The Tumbler of God Chesterton as MysticGreat book for those of us who love Chesterton The author argues that GKC is a mystic and may be a saint Chesterton looked at the mundane stuff with wonder He views existence as mysterious and miraculous Because of that viewpoint he was happy If you haven t read GKC this may be a good introduction 1621380270 When one thinks of great mystics of the Catholic faith we think of people like St Padre Pio St Bernadette of Lourdes and St Th r se of Lisieux to name a few Gilbert Keith Chesterton is probably far from people s minds but Fr Robert Wild looks to add him to the list of mystics with his book The Tumbler of God For those who find the title unusual I refer you to Chesterton s work on St Francis or just reading Chapter 6 of this book. The tumbler of god kindle book review The book starts off by explaining who Chesterton was and what went on inside of his head Fr Wild then draws upon different authors including Karl Rahner and Thomas Merton to provide different definitions of mysticism and to examine how well Chesterton would fit into these molds The author then takes the time to explain what exactly constituted Chesterton s mysticism If I understand it correctly Chesterton s mysticism stemmed from seeing reality for what it is and glorifying the Creator The rest of the book then deals with the mysticism found in some of Chesterton s important writings such as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. The tumbler of god book author I am usually able to pick one chapter in a book as my favorite but I was unable to narrow it down to just one with this book Two stood out in particular to me The first was the chapter on Chesterton s work Orthodoxy This is one of my favorite Chesterton works so the extra insight I gained on it from this chapter was helpful and kindled a spark in me to approach this work again with new eyes The other chapter I particularly liked was the final chapter which made a case for Chesterton s sainthood As Fr Wild points out Chesterton isn t your typical mystic or saint but that s doesn t make him any less of a mystic or saint It just goes to show that God made us all unique and we all have the potential for sainthood. The tumbler of god kindle book This entire book was written like a thesis by Fr Wild With a first person point of view you are able to hear the author s passion enthusiasm and zeal for the great man that G. The tumbler of god ebook online K Chesterton was It was a truly enlightening book which strengthens the case for canonizing Chesterton as well So whether you are a seasoned reader of Chesterton or someone looking to start reading his works you will find gold when reading this 5 star book I look forward to the future with the hope that we will one day have a Saint Gilbert 1621380270 Being a Protestant this book was very fascinating as it introduced me to the idea that there are people who the Church considers mystics there must be a criteria for making that distinction The author makes the case throughout the book for Chesterton being a true mystic as the Catholic Church sees a mystic Chesterton s own use of the word mysticism or mystical is centered on the idea these words refer to a teaching that points to another world while being enmeshed very much in this one it refers to things unseen but also to realities very much enfleshed a man and a woman forming one sacramental substance The quote is from Robert Wild and his observations on Chesterton Throughout the book the author attempts to formulate a case that Chesterton was a true mystic as defined by the Catholic Church As he lays out his case he quotes many of Chesterton s works and in doing so truly does clarify his thesis that Chesterton was a mystic I love Chesterton s writings and I think this author describes his character and his writings and their relevance for our time in a way that does indeed point to his being a wonderful mystic as one whose writings and life pointed to another world while living wholeheartedly in this world and seeing the world around him with the eyes of wonder and awe Robert Wild calls Chesterton a lay mystic who as Wild so succinctly puts it was doing the work of the mind in the street Wild quotes another man who said of Chesterton He was such a happy man that you would think he had found God I love that quote also because as I continue to read Chesterton that is the great overall spirit that permeates his writings the JOY that he found in the Creator 1621380270
