Anna Quadrada s Ripples of Silence is a novel about silence Silence means many things in many cultures but when I first saw the title I blurted out yes That s interesting And on reflection of course the use of the word silence in a novel title like emptiness for instance triggered something in me deep beyond words The novel than came up to expectations for this reader In fact it is one of the most provocative reads I ve had in years and a very subtle one The main character in the book allows himself to be challenged by what I can only call the existential question in his successful career This is the sort of niggling question that lies beneath the surface questions that arise in all careers and professions It is the kind of question which this reader in his own life has been dodging in order he believed to survive The main character in responding authentically to the existential question facing him in his career challenges the reader in his own As it does the other characters in the novel But I am giving the wrong impression by reporting the heavy stuff The fact is that the novel is not heavy at all It is beautifully written in short digestible chapters and in a soft fluent language that respects the reader and woos him into a very satisfying drama.
