What do the Los Angeles Lakers St Louis Cardinals New York Knicks San Diego Chargers Oakland Raiders Kentucky Wildcats Louisville Cardinals Western Kentucky Hilltoppers Furman Paladins and the Eastern Kentucky Colonels all have in common They have all had star athletes who began their careers as Corbin Redhounds For four decades the 30 s 40 s 50 s and 60 s Corbin High School sports were the glue that held the town together For those who worked on the railroad cut or hauled timber or chiseled and drug coal from the nearby mines football and basketball was a diversion from the daily chore of providing for their families Sports were the common denominator that transcended economic levels of Corbin s citizenry Sports Hall of Fames are dotted with Corbin Frank Selvy Rodger Bird Calvin Bird Billy Bird Jerry Bird Steve Bird Roy Kidd Nick Denes David Selvy Fred Radar Mel Chandler Princess McBurney Jesse Grant Marvin Selvy Bobby Terrell Curly Selvy Edd Selvy Ted Meadors Jerry Smith Bob Barton Tommy Adkins Bob Coleman Marion Cluggish Curt Selvy There are others who were prep All Americans college All Americans NBA and NFL all stars The Boys from Corbin America s Greatest Little Sports Town is not just a story it s a phenomenon The Boys From Corbin America s Greatest Little Sports TownThis is the story of the Selvy and Bird families mostly from Corbin Kentucky who had several and by several I mean at least three members of the family go on to play professional sports These families made their names in the 1930s 40s and 50s but they are legends in Kentucky The book begins with a discussion about the coach who made a difference in Corbin Nick Denes Interestingly Denes was also a college coach at both Western Kentucky University where the baseball field is Nick Denes field and Louisville I believe Denes made a huge impact on the sport environment in Corbin and began producing outstanding athletes Starting with Frank Selvy the boys from Corbin were fairly highly sought out for both college and pro teams Mr West chronicles the families histories and touches on the careers of all of the Selvys and Birds along with a Smith a Cluggish and a Meador Anyone who has followed Kentucky sports for a while knows these names heck even a new comer to the state like myself knows some of the names The book was easy to read It is written in a homey style and sounds like old timers sitting around the stove telling tales But these tales I believe are accurate or as accurate as Mr West could determine He relies on old accounts of the games as well as interviews with surviving members of the teams to piece together the historical account of the boys from Corbin I enjoyed the book but not I am sure as much as someone who has grown up with these tales would I did learn some interesting facts including the fact that at one time the New York Knicks boasted two Corbin natives Frank Selvy and Jerry Bird in their starting lineup. Was homelander going to kill ryan In all this is an interesting book one all Kentucky sport fans should pick up 1938905237
