Two stars is being generous The writing is nothing inspired and the whole storyline is given on the front inside book jacket cover flap Dick Maggie s love interest is a manipulative jerk and the heroine is apparently too vapid to realize it The plot was predictable and her family was just infuriating The one thing I did like about this book was that the Catholic faith was portrayed in a pretty positive light Overall though this wasn t worth my time Maggie of Barnaby Bay
Maggie Barnaby s seventeenth birthday was not a happy one for she was being sent to school in Canada to forget Dick O Brien first mate on her father s schooner Captain Barnaby liked Dick but he wanted a better match for his daughter Dick was just as determined to have Maggie and insisted they elope Though she loved him dearly Maggie could not bring herself to marry without her parents consent so Dick quick tempered and proud broke their secret engagement Then fate took a hand War threatened between Britain and the United States and Maggie could not cross Lake Ontario to nearby Canada which became enemy territory as the War of 1812 began Dick sailed with Captain Barnaby to transport supplies and ammunition for the American army and Maggie found herself being courted by another suitor George Clarke a wealthy local merchant As the war began to touch the lives of everyone Maggie had little time to think about her personal problems Her father had to be warned of the approaching British fleet and Maggie and her Indian friend made a long and hazardous trip by canoe to reach them in time Back in Barnaby Bay Maggie was shocked to see blue signal lights down by the shore and soon everyone was aware that there was a traitor in their midst How the whole town braced for invasion when a British frigate s guns were trained on the port how the traitor was discovered and how Maggie and Dick were reunited make an exciting story based on a true incident during the war of 1812 on the Great Lakes from book jacket front flap Maggie of Barnaby Bay Librarian Note There is than one author by this name in the Goodreads database.
