Literature Fiction Little Human accidents will The first poem Admitting Drunk to the Country establishes the direction and tone for the rest It consists of what seems a drunken rant of disconnected thoughts but the thoughts are subtly connected portraying the life of a gay man and a mind at odds with itself It speaks as well to the turbulent nature of the creative process and there are significant insights into larger issues as in a line like and drunk is bigger than any one of us That narrative is taken up by the second poem Little Human Accidents from which the title of the collection is taken or to which it is given and it depicts a single such accident The protagonist drunk addressing his partner who cannot sleep says finally you re so gentle leave the battling of nightmares to me Here the compassion and humanity of the protagonist shows through the delirium of his words. Little Human Accidents Literature fiction and books Whether this collection is about himself or a fictional character it is a fine and sad line to walk but Marbut does it artfully and with integrity It is well worth reading Dr Neil Ellman Author of Parallels Selected Ekphrastic Poetry 2009 2012 An advanced copy was given to me by the publisher Literature Fiction These poems seem strongly personal with an endearing main character The imagery is clever and sharply crafted and the rhythm never breaks making each poem absorbing until the end There s an other worldly quality with influences of Kerouac and Bukowski I really enjoyed this break from my reality Literature Fiction It is clear that Damon doesn t just love poetry poetry is his essence of life From the moment Marbs wakes he breathes it in Like the heart he wears it on his sleeve In fact I m convinced that his heart is made of poetry pumping out the life blood of iconic vernacular It takes the form of domesticated animals a prime example of this is evident in Cat s Call It s the fly that buzzes about in the room He eats and drinks it for sustenance he consumes it and poetry in turn consumes him He demonstrates to the reader that it s not the end of the world to be married to your work in ways than one poetry surpasses any other human life partner when it comes to understanding and companionship you are least likely to have quarrels with poetry about in laws kids finances etc Though in its presence you are either at your best or at your worst the behaviours reflect with what is expected with human relationships. EBook Little Human accidents pdf In relation to the human aspect I was also drawn to his ability of making poetry out of his community which gives the collection an autobiographical sketch Not only does the author flesh out his characters factual or fictitious in tremendous detail but they act as his supporting cast and not plucked from obscurity the roles each individual is assigned to are important to the storytelling and shape the speaker s environment As I got to learn about Muriel Johnny Mike Sylvia the cat and good old Billy Collins and Charles Bukowski as recurring characters vicariously through Marbs the I began to appreciate them for their quirks and talents the group feeds off the individual and vice versa Above all the payoff to Little Human Accidents is the evidence of raw unadulterated emotions of the speaker the story book Marbs if you will He is rough around the edges He does somewhat coast listlessly through life and is an openly gay man Whether the musings of love were about love that is current and runs deep love that was lost love that never happened or love that was unrequited the sexual orientation whether it s same sex or between a man and a woman becomes irrelevant even though there is a mixed bag of poems about hetero and homosexual sexcapades the lasting impression on the reader lies within the message Marbut is a Zen master of the open book truly comfortable living in his own skin Coincidences and the embellishment of truth do not exist in the realm of Little Human Accidents Only the heart can utter the pulse of the sardonic and sublime Literature Fiction
