Enjoyed reading George Baker s autobiography for the most part he comes across as a likeable and sensitive person The best part of the book is the detailed descriptions of his birth and childhood as a diplomat s son in Bulgaria during the 1930s In later life he became a writer and screen adaptor of some note which was quite an achievement for someone who by his own admission struggled to read until he was 11 years old and was not exactly gifted academically Baker was a prolific character actor rarely out of work and had parts in some of the UK s most famous films and TV shows The second half of the book felt somewhat rushed although it would have been a struggle to fit in every single one of his stage and screen performances Nevertheless there are some notable omissions including details of two of his three appearances in James Bond films as well as his role as Number 2 in ITC s The Prisoner His most famous role was that of Inspector Wexford in the TVS series of the same name although he surprisingly and mistakenly referrs to it as being produced by Southern Television I was a bit disappointed with the limited descriptions of his work on Wexford as it was clearly a role he enjoyed For an actor used to conveying feelings and showing empathy through dialogue and behaviour it was a shame he offered so few insights into his work and relationships Koplowitz 2021 George Baker
