What secret lies in the matterhorn
But I feel i could have gotten the same level of insight by reading or watching a documentary 347 This was the first book I read by this author and I think it will also be my last The writing style is not really to my liking The whole thing was filled up with so much stuff I had problems to filter out what was important to the main story line All these developments that in the end weren t really important to the crime took away from my reading fun and made it quite some work to finish 347 Review from my blog The Word FiendRating 8The opening chapters of this debut novel won Mich le Rowe the 2011 CWA Crime Writers Association Debut Dagger Award and I can see why This is crime writing just the way I like it smart.
What lies hidden in earth's cave
Fish Hoek and surrounding areas is brought to life with vivid description and Rowe has populated her story with an eclectic cast of characters who bring energy to the scenes. What lies below book All of the characters in What Hidden Lies have interesting backstories that shape their view of the world and their decisions The fact that this level of character development isn t limited to the central characters is something that I must applaud the author for It takes a lot of work and it has paid off in making the interactions between the characters engaging and it allows for Rowe to introduce some great red herrings into the plot to keep the reader engaged The two central characters Detective Persy Jones and Marge Labuschagne act as interesting foils for each other Both are fiercely independent and determined to be taken seriously in their lives.
Everyone here is lying kindle
When Detective Persephone Persy Jonas is forced to work with retired criminal psychologist Dr Marge Labuschagne to solve the murder of a suspected sex offender suspicion and distrust threaten to derail the investigation Persy believes the killer is her childhood sweetheart now turned vicious gangster Marge is sure the answer lies in the victim s shady past As the women race against time and their own prejudice to hunt the killer past and present collide unearthing long buried secrets and lies As the hunt intensifies they realise they have in common than they think and are bound in ways they could never have imagined Finally faced with a ruthless killer it seems that the darkest secrets are the ones they are hiding from themselves What Hidden Lies Persy Jonas 1 Brilliant first novel from a scriptwriter who obviously knows her trade Apart from a solid if not revolutionary plot Michele Rowe portrays with subtlety two very different women a young agressive coloured cop full of material racial insecurities and a 50 ish white shrink divorced a control freak mother with difficulties to cut the umbilical cord with her youngest son and face the changes in her life Fascinating realistic and well defined different women working together on a case and no they don t become BFF at the end The rest of the cast is interesting too and represent various facets of the Rainbow Nation. Hidden listening devices for sale More generally among the dozen or so south african crime books I ve read this one is the first that really delved a little bit into post apartheid South Africa The action takes place in a mostly white Cape suburb globally preserved from any form of township violence so it is circumscribed to a particular environment but the author does not shy away from pointing intrisic racism not always conscious from everybody toward everybody else the lowliness of the life of upper middle class white people and the frantic aspirations of coloureds to be like them Of the few South African authors I know of Rowe is closer to Deon Meyer and should appeal to his fans 347 A South African whodunit I ve read lots of British and Swedish whodunits I ve read several whodunits set in the USA and Norway and a few set in Denmark Greece and Turkey But it doesn t seem to be a popular genre with South African writers So I enjoyed this one and not just because it was set in South Africa but because it was a pretty good specimen of the genre The protagonist Detective Sergeant or is it Constable she seems to get promoted without explanation in the first couple of chapters Persy Jonas seems like a fairly ordinary person not a poet not an aristocrat not alcoholic or going through a traumatic divorce not a rogue cop perpetually on the verge of being fired for drunkenness but brought back in the nick of time because no one else is such a brilliant detective Persy short for Persephone Jonas is an ordinary person and an ordinary cop It makes it real somehow Of course she has her problems which cop real or fictional doesn t She has problems at home domestic violence3 in the family She has problems coming to terms with things in her past It s just kind of refreshing that those problems don t include booze and or divorce or perpetual disciplinary problems with superiors related to insubordination And of course there are problems at work There are problems of racism sexism and corruption rivalries and personality clashes But they don t take over the story In addition in many whodunits one gets the impression that murder is the only crime the police ever investigate so the stories seem somehow unreal In this book there is a murder investigation but it is sandwiched in between burglary theft and looking for a lost dog which the police ar also investigating That makes it feel convincing as a police procedural somehow There are a few editorial slip ups Persie s rank being one of them but they don t detract from the story so I ll still give it five stars I think Persie Jonas could become one of my favourite fictional detectives 347 I was expecting too much from this book and I ended up being disappointedThe two main protagonists were imho equally hard to like and the investigation felt blurry far fetched and tedious The third point of interest of this book the depiction of south african society was indeed delivered and it was truly interesting pacy and character driven. What lies below book The cover for What Hidden Lies is very much in line with the current style in crime fiction moody with large print that catches the eye The image of a lone figure walking along a beach with dark clouds hovering above has been chosen to suit the story It could represent either Persy or Marge in their journey to find a killer both fiercely independent and isolated from those around them The Penguin South Africa design team has done a great job with this cover. Is hiding something lying What Hidden Lies is Mich le Rowe s debut novel but it suffers from very few of the signs of an author trying to find her feet in a new book Rowe s background is in scriptwriting and I think that this has given her a great advantage when diving into the field of novel writing Rowe s writing style is assured and she makes great use of the peripheral characters and side plots to add interest and depth to the central murder investigation What Hidden Lies is well paced and like all good crime fiction has the reader trying to solve the case right along with the characters The Cape Town setting mainly centred around Noordhoek but both are also incredibly isolated and lonely I think it s these similarities that cause the initial sparks to fly in their relationship but they do ultimately find a grudging respect for each other which I will be interested to see develop in further books. What hidden lies epub ebook download Mich le Rowe has produced a great debut novel with What Hidden Lies and I am looking forward to following her writing career as it develops Things can only keep getting better and that makes this reader very happy 347
