5 5 Fourteen year old Ellie makes a friend Uncommonly her friend is a 51 year old gravedigger Fenton whom she meets only at night As their friendship blooms through those nightly discussions they exchange secrets that eventually make up Suzanne Perazzini s novel Fierce Mind The title does the book justice both characters do have a stunning intelligence While Ellie s is of an intellectual intelligence Fenton displays an emotional intelligence that made me grow fond of him The father figure aspect of his character is well developed and the ending makes him justice in this sense I quite enjoyed Ellie s fun facts and quotes through the novel I became accustomed to the repetitive structure of their meetings and found myself unable to close the book I d always tell myself that I would just start the chapter in order to read that upcoming fun fact or quote but then I d finish the chapter only to start the cycle once I ve barely put it down The tone was interesting It did take me a while to get into the story because of the heavy use of dialogue and little use of description Be patient readers and the style will grow on you It reminded me a bit of Samuel Beckett s style if he was a woman and wrote YA novels This story can definitely show how far an author can go with only dialogue I imagine Perazzini s goal was to provide as little description as possible since their story is developed in the darkness and silence of the cemetery but I did miss the description Every character felt a bit faceless to me I did enjoy the book and would recommend it to not only its intended audience but also to individuals in their twenties and thirties The language is not heavy but the subject matter becomes quite philosophical at times Last but not least I would like to thank Aspendawn Books as well as Netgalley for the free copy of this book to review Suzanne Perazzini I feel like an old time prospector panning for gold sifting through indie books looking for treasure When I downloaded Fierce Mind I found my golden nugget What an amazing book This book is pithy full of concise ideas with much substance When I was growing up I equated pithy with uninteresting Not so with Fierce Mind It grabs at your interest and holds it steadily page after page It is a story of a fourteen year old girl Ellie having midnight conversations with a gravedigger Fenton in a dark graveyard What drives the reader s interest is the secrets what happened during Fenton s missing five years that he won t ever divulge What horrible secret is Ellie keeping about the happenings in her strange home Who is the evil character Ray Wilson and why is he coming to kill Fenton Plus there is a murderer on the loose when and where will he pop into the story I found there was no lull in this story where I could put the book aside I wanted to keep reading propelled by those secrets. Fierce mind ne demek The characters are well developed interesting and endearing My heart went out to Ellie who is friendless picked on in school for her intelligence and obsessive compulsive tendencies As the story unfolds it becomes apparent that Fenton committed some unsavory acts during and after his time in Vietnam Still I found myself rooting for him to shake off his grief induced lassitude and start living again. Revolution fierce mind highlighter palette What I really enjoy and actively seek out in a book is when ideas are presented that make me say Wow I never thought about that before It expands me and induces my mind to go in directions I had previously never considered Fierce Mind did that repeatedly At times I thought the author had her toe over the line that demarcated preachy from non preachy but did I hold that against her Not at all The story was too good The ideas were too great In the last two months Suzanne Perazzini published several novels on which I can t wait to start reading Check out her bio on her food blog Strands Of My Life She s such an interesting person What I loved about Fierce Mind The wonderful ideas the suspense the unusual story lineWhat I did not love Can t think of a thing. Fierce mindset Together these dynamic characters capture the reader s attention and pull them along for a sometimes frightening mysterious and heart warming journey Fierce Mind shows both the fragility and strength of the human spirit It is well written and reflects Ms Perazzini s unique voice and perception Personally Purchased Ecopy Suzanne Perazzini Fierce Mind was an interesting read Because the story is told mostly through the perspective of a young girl with OCD the reader is given an intimate look at the difficulties she lives with on a daily basis However I had some troubles connecting with the main character and picturing her in my mind because the tone of her thoughts seemed to shift from very young to those of an older teen or even new adult on a regular basis Towards the end of the novel it made her feel a bit contrived to me and what interested me in the beginning started to bother me Suzanne Perazzini Ok at first I thought I was reading Groundhog Day because every chapter happened over and over and over But insanely the book works even though it s a weird relationship between a fifty something year old black man who dig graves and a young girl who visits him at night and watches him The girl riddles him with facts and stories that entertain him and he sings while she counts numbers Slowly her story comes out and it stunned and amazed me Thanks netgalley for a good read Suzanne Perazzini
