The sisters zenaide and charlotte bonaparte Every now and then a book comes along that makes a difference Sara Harris s study of the american nun and her adjustment to a changing Church and a changing society is one of those books In gathering material for this study the author lived and worked closely with nuns from different parts of the country She found them not only willing but anxious to speak frankly about the life they have chosen to lead and the Church with they have chosen to serve Highly personal and revealing these are the voices of very real women speaking about the conflicts created by their lives of devotion to poverty chastity and obedience about the deep rewards of their vocation The Sisters The Changing World of the American NunHarris interviews revealed minute seemingly mundane aspects of both the civil rights movement and the life of a nun pre and post Vatican II Each individual is revealed with depth and clarity with however much of her background she s willing to reveal My only complaint is that the interviewees tended to monologue without break for many pages I don t know if Harris simply transcribed their lengthy speeches or just decided against breaking them up This made the book drag on quite a bit The Sisters The Changing World of the American Nun
