He is also a heavy drinker and quite abusive Dottie while she doesn t love her situation she uses her strength and courage she gained for her idol Nellie Bly one of the first female investigative journalists to make life exciting in the camp Dottie is always exploring for answers and the truth of situations happening in and around the camp A sad event brings all the families no matter the race and ethic background in the end While I appreciate Holly Moulder s take on a true local and true events where civilians of America where rounded up and assumed to be a threat to their place where they made their home I take issue with her narrative because the characters and heart was there but the moxie and passion to tell the story was not in place I gave this book one star because this was a very dry generic read It was slow starting and an okay ending Dottie was such a strong female character with such a zeal for life and I would love to have seen her utilized English Internment camps in the US during WWII are usually associated with the detainment of Japanese Americans But they actually were not the only group to be classified as enemy aliens People who had been born in Germany or Italy were also sent to internment camps.
